In 1996, 20 years after Brashear High School opened in Beechview, its southern wing was reconfigured to become Pittsburgh South Hills 6-8. The Pittsburgh Public Schools facility educates more than 400 children from several surrounding neighborhoods, gaining a big chunk of that enrollment when Prospect Elementary School in Mt. Washington closed in 2006. South Hills Middle School, as it’s also known, boasts an impressive 11-to-1 student-teacher ratio. The school motto, “We treat everyone with dignity and respect,” is aided by a positive behavior incentive system called Husky Paws. Students who exhibit polite, accountable and safe behaviors are rewarded with school store merchandise and special activities. South Hills 6-8 was chosen to be the English as a second language (ESL) hub for the city’s southern region. Eligible students receive one to three ESL classes, depending on their level of English proficiency, and are given the support needed to thrive. Sports offered include cross country, volleyball, soccer, flag football, basketball, wrestling and a Special Olympics bocce team, as well as a dance team and cheerleading squad. Students also prepare year-round for the annual Nationality Night celebration, where the community comes together to enjoy song and dance performances. At South Hills 6-8, educators work together to grow students academically, socially and emotionally.

I didn't like anything at all. It's full of racial injustice against whites, tons of drama, and just horrible teachers.

Some teachers are great. But there are a few teachers that I cannot understand as to why they have choose to teach. Some are rude when you ask for help and do not support the children in a positive way. There are fights and some teachers or staff just stand there and watch. I know because I have see...

This a great school! Teachers are wonderful! We just got a new principal and vice principal that are a great addition to the school. My son loves it.

Great teachers, however, sadly, the principal is rude, unhelpful, and unprofessional. She is probably the rudest, coldest person I have ever dealt with ever. She assumes that because your child is enrolled her inner-city school, you must be a deadbeat piece of trash parent who cares nothing for your...
