The Island School holds close ties with the East Village neighborhood in which it is located, with plentiful outreach programs to stimulate parent and community participation. A coed public school serving students in prekindergarten through eighth grade, the Island School’s student-to-teacher ratio comes in at 10-to-1.
A standout feature is the school’s ambitious dual language program with elective classes designed to make students fluent speakers, readers and writers in both Spanish and English. Designated a “Showcase School” by the New York City Department of Education, the Island School engages in a wide range of public and private partnerships with the Educational Alliance, the Lower Eastside Girls Club, the Ryan-Nena Community Health Center and the NEAG Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development.
The school participates in mentorship programs with the New York City Police Department and Bard College as well. Located in a restored and thoroughly modernized building, the Island School endorses an open door policy and community school model, with offerings that include health services, an after-school enrichment program and a “Makerspace” room for children to learn, play, and discover their super powers as students.

This school is a wonderful community school. Every staff member is very professional and very caring. They all are so pleasant and friendly.

PS/MS188 is a wonderful school. The staff is full of love caring and motivated individuals that are the best role models a student can have. The school has a safe and welcoming environment, there are so many extra curricular activities such as flag football, tennis, violin classes and a chorus.
