St. Matthias Catholic Academy is a private school with about 285 students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Located at 58-25 Catalpa Avenue in Queens, New York, St. Matthias Catholic Academy serves the Ridgewood and Glendale neighborhood pridefully as a Catholic elementary school. Children are provided the opportunity to strengthen their faith through daily prayers and prayer services. The mission is to empower students through formal education, to reach the fullness of their potential as children made in God's image, and to encourage them to direct their talents toward building a more just society.
Teachers help every child to fulfill their potential given the right learning environment at school and parental support. However, for students to develop and learn, they must participate actively in the interaction. As a result, students are well-prepared for high school and have won numerous scholarships thanks to a demanding curriculum.
The school's name stemmed from the early 1900s when Bishop Charles McDonnell had the idea to name a church in the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens after each Apostle in the early 1900s. The name St. Matthias was chosen when a church was intended to be built in the neighborhood of Ridgewood.
The St. Matthias Catholic Academy and St. Matthias Church are located on property formerly a part of the Meyerose farm, which Jacob Meyerose bought in 1856. The school and the church first shared a building, but later the school moved into its residence. One hundred fifty pupils and four teachers, including Father Nicholas Wagner, the church's founding pastor, entered St. Matthias School on October 4, 1909, when it first opened its doors. The school had 900 students enrolled by the end of 1922. Five extra classrooms were added in 1966 due to a building extension.
As of September 1, 2017, St. Matthias School changed from a school to an academy. For children in Pre-K through Grade 8, St. Matthias provides a demanding academic atmosphere. The more than 7,000 graduates attest to the school's accomplishments and dedication to academic excellence.
The current principal since 2021 is Mr. Neil Gering. Principals at Saint Matthias Catholic Academy are central to the school's excellent reputation as the shepherd of the school's faculty and students.
St. Matthias Catholic Academy established an After School Program for students in Grades PreK to 6 from dismissal to 6:00 pm. Students at St. Matthias Catholic Academy participate in various organizations and activities after school. Sports Club, Step Club, Yearbook, Cinema Club, Drama Club, Debate Club, Robotics Club, and Lego Club are a few groups and activities. In addition, students may join the school science program to access the hydroponics lab.
