Fun is at the core of the curriculum at Powell Magnet Elementary School (Powell Magnet). Educating approximately 400 students in kindergarten through fifth grades about the value of creativity, Powell Magnet has earned much local publicity for its innovative style of teaching that has been continuously gamified since the 1980s. Children are welcomed into the school each morning by a beloved crossing guard who sings and dances. Pokémon-based games teach addition and subtraction, and every effort is made to make learning engaging. Powell Magnet offers the community an 11:1 student-teacher ratio, as well as a rich array of extracurriculars including art, band, dance and drama. Students can also participate in Powell Magnet’s English as a second language program or take Spanish lessons. Overall reading and math grades trend lower than State averages; however, Powell Magnet prepares students for real-world scenarios that involve many variables and a multitude of interactions. The school’s goal is to build and strengthen brain pathways to develop students’ strategic thinking ability. A rare find indeed inside the King Charles neighborhood, this gifted and talented magnet school is currently the only school devoted to play and ingenuity in the United States.

I'm so thankful for this school. It is a small, close knit school and each year it just keeps getting better and better. The staff cares deeply about the children and families and the future success of the school.

My children have had a great experience. They both enjoy and are excited to attend school each day which is important to me because I want them to develop a love for continuous learning. They have done very well on the EOG's eventhough I'm not a big fan of all the testing students have to do these d...

We have enjoyed the new Play theme a lot. We love that this school is small and has a small community and family feel. Our child loves the domains and electives, including dance, drama, coding, engineering, and music. We are excited that the school is learning about Conscious Discipline. The librari...
