Known to many as “The Castle on The Hill” thanks to a renovated playground earned from contributions from the Church Hill Association, Bellevue Elementary School in Church Hill is one of the first three public elementary schools built in Richmond, Va. The school’s history is rich. Originally built in 1872 and named after Bellevue Hospital, the school site was moved in 1914 to the former home of Elizabeth Van Lew, a Southerner who carried out Union espionage work during the Civil War. Part of the school’s mission statement is “to engage all students in STEAM, a student-centered, project-based instructional model that integrates science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.” The school consistently demonstrates higher scores in school readiness compared to the division and state levels from kindergarteners' preschool experience. Bellevue serves just under 250 students in pre-K through fifth grade with a student to teacher ratio of 14:1, which is on average with state student to teacher ratios. Of note, in 2013 the school received a centennial gift of a restored museum within the school, just adjacent to the auditorium.

We have been part of the Bellevue elementary community for several years now. And, I have got to say just how wonderful of a place this school has been for our children. The engagement and love that the teachers and faculty show for the students is first rate. I was surprised to see the rating here...
