Highland Hills Elementary School is a part of the San Antonio Independent School District, the third largest school district in the greater San Antonio area. Named after the neighborhood it serves, the school opened in 1952 and continues to grow its enrollment. It is the largest elementary school in the Highland Hills neighborhood and serves grades prekindergarten – five. NICHE which evaluates colleges and schools based on several core competencies, gives Highland Hills an overall above average rating with the areas related to the teaching staff and academics leading the way. Employing tenets of Project Based Learning, Highland Hills uses a student-centered approach that focuses on collaboration and development of critical thinking skills. Foundational curricula include Science, Reading, Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Social Studies. There are also Bilingual and Gifted and Talented Programs available. Students have a wide range of extracurricular activities to select from as well. Offerings like Folklorico Dance, Honors Choir, Art Club, University Interscholastic League activities, and the districts first Strings Program are just a few examples of programs that round out the educational opportunities at Highland Hills.
