Murdock-Portal Elementary is an elementary school located in West San Jose, California. This School is part of the highly rated Cupertino Union School District, the largest school district in northern California. Murdock-Poral is medium in size, serving 573 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
This unique institution has a bit of a different approach to teaching from other schools in the area, with a combined two-year classroom divided into kindergarten and first, second and third, and fourth and fifth grades. This is because research has shown that a longer bonding period with teachers and classmates allow students to strive for in-depth goals and take more academic risks.
In addition to the multi-age classrooms, the school has a modified schedule that starts earlier in August and ends later in June, allowing for more breaks during the school year. This has shown to help students retain more material than a traditional schedule.
While the classroom size is slightly higher than the district average, students at Murdock-Portal Elementary have higher test scores than the state and national average with 93% of students scoring at or above proficient levels for reading and math.

It was a great school, until things changed. New head, brought in new staff for the exiting grades. Would recommend the school for K/1,2/3. I'd pull my child out after 3rd grade. The old head, knew what she was doing. The new doesn't seem to understand the school's motto of treating every one equall...

Teachers are very dedicated. My daughter is loving the experience so far. She moved here from a CUSD neighborhood school. Teaching and learning is advanced compared to the other school.
