Founded in 1971, Pluralistic School One (PS1) is a private, co-ed, independent elementary school for kindergarten through sixth grade students. The school is made up of approximately 210 pupils who attend multi-age classes combining two years and are limited in size to fewer than 25 students. PS1’s student-to-faculty, staff and administration ratio is 5-to-1. The school’s founding value of pluralism is the belief that a community is enriched when individual differences are respected and welcomed, building upon a child’s passions, interests, talents, personal expressions and uniqueness, as highlighted in this quote from A.A. Milne: “The things that make me different are the things that make me.” The PS1 program nurtures children's social-emotional development, creativity and interconnectedness in the school’s community and curriculum. It builds a healthy foundation for character by encouraging children to find their voices and advocate for themselves from a young age. Weekly "circle times" help them become comfortable with communication, public speaking and collaboration. PS1 allocates 19.5 percent of tuition income to financial aid. The school’s award-winning sustainable campus in the heart of Santa Monica offers indoor and outdoor education spaces for each classroom, with service-learning projects at all grade levels. PS1’s aftercare includes enrichment classes and play activities.

PS1 is an amazing community. The kids all learn from one another no matter the age from mixing during recess, lunch and aftercare. The teachers are amazing. My son absolutely loves this school. He started out shy and reserved and has really blossomed into a confident kid that can express his views and listen to others.

PS1 is an amazing elementary school that lives up to the hype. It's approach of honoring what is unique in each child as they grow and learn, while creating a cohesive community is the key to helping children develop confidently. We love the teachers, the other parents and most of all the kids. Our children are so blessed to have their childhoods shaped by PS1.

The community at PS1 is very special. The school is known for its friendly and welcoming environment for both parents and children. As a second year family, I feel very comfortable at the school and love all the volunteer opportunities that are made available (even day of). I feel that my child is r...

We enrolled our children at PS1 after having them start in our local public school. The experience was good, but very unstable with teachers leaving mid-year, etc. At PS1, the teachers have so much dedication and are really committed to working there. The school values childhood, and the academic pr...

We really wanted to love this school. Administration declined once the original head of school and founder retired. The school lacks in diversity in race and disability. And if your child develops any type of learning disability, the school and teachers are not understanding nor equip to deal with t...
