At Cedar Park Elementary, a public school in the Lake City neighborhood of Seattle, the Expeditionary Learning curriculum deepens and expands students’ knowledge. The school is held to the same Common Core state standards, yet the Expeditionary Learning curriculum encourages a more hands-on, project-based and student-led approach to learning. Cedar Park Elementary students are offered a minimum of three fieldwork opportunities per school year in an effort to integrate an academic curriculum within a real-world setting. Also part of the Expeditionary Learning program are weekly enrichment opportunities for all students where they are given time to IDEA: Imagine, Design, Engineer, and Artistically create. Cedar Park Elementary serves students from preschool through fifth grade. The building was opened in 2017 and has a capacity of 250-280 students. This equates to about two classes per grade level. The school offers all of the traditional supports like special education, social-emotional learning and a multilingual program for English learners. Its academic programs are complemented with opportunities for clubs and activities, like the Associated Student Body and the Green Team Club. Cedar Park Elementary’s unique approach to learning makes for a well-rounded academic experience fit for early childhood.
