John Rogers Elementary, located in Lake City’s lovely Meadowbrook neighborhood since the 1950s, serves approximately 350 kindergarten through fifth grade students. The school strives to create a community where every student is “seen, engaged, challenged and growing.” Teaching to the high-quality Common Core State Standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy, John Rogers staff maintain that reading and writing promote higher-level thinking skills. The school also offers advanced learning opportunities for students seen as highly capable by Seattle Public Schools. School-day opportunities to explore include student council, instrumental and vocal music, and Finding Urban Nature environmental science. In addition, John Rogers offers a volunteer green eam which created the school’s garden to learn about farm-to-table and sustainable concepts. Using only recycled materials, they also crafted a mural of their otter mascot. All students receive year-round swimming lessons at the Meadowbrook Pool and can participate in after-school programs offered by the adjacent Meadowbrook Community Center, such as computer science, messy science, trendy crafts, drama, circus arts, comic books and flag football. As reflected in their school song, being a John Rogers otter means: O – offer kindness, T – treat others with respect, T – teamwork, E- every otter cares, and R – responsibility for being the best they can be.

There is a rich culture at this school that is undermined by a prevalent culture of social bullying. A cliquey exclusive culture exists amongst students that intentionally creates a sense of otherness for students on the outside. Despite anti bully lessons, social exclusion and mean behavior is the...

This school used to be great and an important part still is: they have an exceptional core teaching staff, who cares deeply about their students and their families. I sent my kid there because I could count on two hands the number of staff whose own children attended the school - they believed in it...

I have a fifth and second grader at John Rogers, and they have both been at the school since kindergarten. This school has a wonderful sense of community, dedicated teachers and staff, and an engaged PTA. We live in the neighborhood and would never consider another elementary school. My children are...

Fabulous! It's a great neighborhood school with a strong sense of community. The PTA is very active and organizes all kinds of wonderful events during the school year as well as playdates in the summer for kids to stay in touch or make new friends.
