As the South Pasadena school closest to the Arroyo Seco green space that stretches along the community’s western border, Arroyo Vista Elementary School is conveniently near the main thoroughfares that tie together the business district. The school’s campus provides a spacious retreat from the commercial world for its kindergarten through fifth grade students, with recently expanded two-story classroom buildings, covered walkways and a central courtyard that features an amphitheater. Both lawn and pavement areas provide sports and recreation opportunities including a huge, colorful map of the United States drawn on the playground. The school administration emphasizes the partnership between parents, staff and the Arroyo Vista PTA is highly active, meeting monthly and coordinating parents’ volunteer activities in the classrooms, the library and ongoing projects. Parents are pleased with the school’s availability of STEM projects and the annual science fair. The school recently dedicated its multi-purpose room as a “makerspace” for the students to build and program robots, using a hands-on KIBO kit that is popular with young children. With a student-to-teacher ratio of 23-to-1, AV students get the attention they need for 83% of them to score at or above the proficiency level for math, with 87% scoring above that level for reading. 91% of AV teachers have three or more years of experience, compared to the state average of 88% with the same experience.
