What began as a humble endeavor in a small building is now a public magnet school housed in a nearly 100-year-old former Masonic temple. The Springfield Conservatory of the Arts in Indian Orchard serves artistically gifted students in grades six through 12. The building features studio spaces and a grand auditorium with nearly 800 seats, complete with a new sound and light system. As a magnet school, the Conservatory attracts art-loving students from all over Springfield. All students take classes in dance, music, visual arts and drama as part of the curriculum along with standards-based, arts-integrated academics. Students at the school also have the opportunity to take performances out into the community at showcases and sporting events. Students are required to maintain a certain GPA in order to perform, which has positive incentivized students and has resulted in a nearly 100% graduation rate. In addition to classwork and performances, the school has several clubs and extracurriculars, such as student council, drama club, National Honor Society, digital media arts club and more. Industry professionals teach the arts curriculum and the school has several partnerships with community organizations such as the Community Music School of Springfield, the Indian Orchard Mills Artists and the Springfield Museums. The Conservatory also offers summer enrichment programs, one of the most popular being the summer mural-making project, and students frequently take part in community events such the Arm in Arm Art Exhibit. Admission to the Conservatory, as well as other charter and magnet schools in Springfield, is conducted through a lottery system.
