I am so grateful for the growth my child has experienced at this school. The focus on self-awareness and advocacy has helped them better understand their learning style and take ownership of their education. The school encourages academic risk-taking, and I've seen my child grow in their abilities across all domains. Above all else when I drop my kids off at St. Paul's I know they are entering a space where the teachers and staff know their name and genuinely care.

Our two kids are in the lower school and it's great. 1)Diversity - racial, religious, socioeconomic - permeates the school, both in the faculty and student body, and programatically in the curriculum. The school is connected with an episcopal church, but the curriculum is not religion-based and families are diverse in faiths and traditions. 2)Kindergarten starts with a focus on social-emotional but as our older child has progressed through grades, academics have clearly become more of a focus. 3)Kids are outside A LOT – on school grounds, leveraging Lake Merritt for nature walks or walking to the YWCA for swim class with the P.E. teacher. The school uses the neighborhood safely and thoughtfully. 4)The % of the school on financial aid is 2x other local independent schools, which is integral to the school's mission and fosters community diversity that exceeds many public schools, let alone other independent ones. 5)90% of 8th graders are accepted into their first-choice high school.

Absolutely awful. They focus more on their welcoming and inclusive aura rather than their actual learning. Staff are unnecessarily strict and enforce so many rules, getting something out of this school is impossible.

Our family has a combined 14 years of experience at St. Paul's, between our two daughters. For us, as Oakland parents, it showcases all the best reasons to live in this city: a deep and tolerant appreciation of community, a passionate engagement with the natural wonders of the area, and a clear-eyed...

review for middle school. We joined in the 6th grade.- PositiveSPES has a higher number of African American students. It touts racial diversity. But there aren’t many Asian kids. Teachers and staff are racially diverse and there are male teachers which is also rare. Teachers are kind, caring, and we...

St. Paul’s Episcopal School (SPES) in Oakland has been an incredible experience for our family as LGBTQ+ parents with two kids attending. From the moment we joined the school community, we’ve felt welcomed, valued, and supported in a way that’s truly meaningful to us. SPES is not just a school—it’s...
