Nestled within walking distance of hundreds of residential homes and apartments in North Tempe, Laird Elementary serves more than 650 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade in Tempe School District No. 3. Although students here have tested below average in math and reading test scores compared to the rest of Arizona, the school has recently become a one-to-one technology school. To help make educational resources and tools more accessible to everyone, all kindergarteners now receive an iPad while all other students receive Chromebooks to assist with their schoolwork. Laird also offers AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, a program for college prep and career-focused learning beyond the classroom including public speaking and organizational skills as well as field trips to universities. Aside from classes, Laird minds students’ overall health and well-being with an on-site nurse and counselor five days a week. The school also provides access to a psychologist, free breakfast and lunches for all students, and after-school childcare which is available through the local Boys & Girls Club. For more well-rounded enrichment, Laird Leopards can participate in after school clubs such as robotics and coding, as well as a number of team sports including football, soccer, basketball, cross country, and spirit line.
