As a school of choice within the Tempe Elementary School District, Meyer Montessori is an alternative public school serving children in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade in the greater Tempe area.
Accredited by the American Montessori Society, Meyer Montessori follows teaching methods that focus on student-led learning and exploration through self-discipline. Instead of a regimented curriculum with teacher-led instruction and lectures, classroom guides (aka Montessori-trained teachers) encourage students to learn at their own pace, use all of their senses, and try to solve problems on their own without being told expected outcomes in advance.
Here, students work in combined classrooms that include students within a three-year age span and host learning materials and activities that children can explore on their own or in groups. And although the educational approach is different from traditional schools, all students at Meyer Montessori still take state standardized tests. Notably, Meyer students often earn test scores in reading that are far above the district and state averages.
For added benefits, Meyer Montessori also offers many programs and extracurriculars through the City of Tempe, such as a before- and -after school care program and a few sports for older students, including kickball, soccer, and basketball. So students can enjoy the best of an individualized learning environment with the social advantages of a broader public school system while at Meyer Montessori.
