Founded in 2005, the Paulo Freire Freedom School is a public charter school serving students in sixth through eighth grades in the West University area of Tucson. Following a mantra to rise, to dream and to know, the faculty here strive to inspire students to embrace two universal values: that all people deserve a life of dignity and that everyone should be a steward of the planet. Paulo Freire weaves its values of social justice and environmental sustainability into its entire curriculum, as even the school’s logo derives from a Mayan glyph that means “to rise.” In addition to in-classroom instruction, the school hosts weekly field trips that rotate by grade level. On these expeditions, students can enrich their learning with far more opportunities than in traditional schools, whether touring world-renowned Biosphere 2, hiking through Saguaro National Park or going behind the scenes at local farms. To further promote deep learning experiences, Paulo Freire also integrates weeklong intersessions twice a year in the fall and the spring, where students can pursue passions on topics of their choosing whether learning about archeology in local canyons or exploring creativity in musical theater. To help all students feel more connected to their community, Paulo Freire integrates service projects to the normal course of the school year and hosts student-led conferences so everyone can grow on a personal level in and out of the classroom.

Everyone seems like they are in a rush to complete their jobs and call it a day. Teachers seem like they are all over the place and they need to be handheld. Admin. just wants to take all the glory and micromanage everybody else. Too much talk about politics. Lack of classroom management. A lot of b...

The students and teachers know one another intimately. They meet several times each week in their little advisory families, and they know that they always have a teacher on their side. They go on about ten field trips each year and spend an additional two weeks on intersessions like backpacking, pho...
