One of four public elementary schools in University City, Missouri, Pershing Elementary places a strong focus on social justice and the arts. The original school opened in 1920 and is named after John J. Pershing, a commander in World War I. The school is in the northeastern area of the city and educates over 250 kindergarten through fifth-grade students in the surrounding area. Pershing has a robust performing arts program. Fourth and fifth-grade students can play stringed instruments while all students benefit from a rotation of teaching artists who collaborate with classroom teachers in six to eight-week residencies. Students interested in engineering receive hands-on learning in science and technology supported by in-school docents. Since 2012, students have been learning in a state-of-the-art LEED facility with a library media center, kiln room and flexible learning spaces. Pershing Elementary School hopes to help students exude excellence in every endeavor.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

After touring all four UCity elementaries before moving to UCity, we chose Pershing because of its incredibly warm community and the obvious commitment of their staff and teachers. Test scores don't tell the whole story. I urge you to visit the scho...

This is a great school. The teachers really care about their students. Their education comes first and the students are treated with respect. My third child just graduated from kdj there and I will put my son in there in 2016 fall.
