Hawaiian Avenue Elementary School, serving students from kindergarten through fifth grade, is a magnet school. Magnet schools within the Los Angeles School District offer theme-based educational programs for more focused learning.
Hawaiian Avenue’s magnet theme is STEAM, which incorporates science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics into all aspects of learning. It’s a one-to-one device school meaning each student is provided with a personal iPad or Chromebook. Teachers are also highly trained in instruction like Writer’s Workshop, Reader’s Workshop, and Cognitively Guided instruction. The goal of Hawaiian Avenue is to prepare its students for the technology acumen they’ll need in the future.
The school population is more than 90% Latino, and about 50% speak English as a second language. About 550 students attend Hawaiian Avenue with a student-to-teacher ratio of about 19:1, lower than the California average of 21:1. Educators place a high emphasis on partnering with families for educational success.
The one-story campus features student-created art, such as expansive murals on the walls of children and nature. It is located just east of Highway 110 in the historic Wilmington neighborhood.

This used to be a great school. Under new leadership it has been quickly declining.

This is the best school in Wilmington with an API of 818! My goddaughter attended first grade and now is in second grade. Her teacher was very good and she learned to read and enjoy reading. The school also celebrates student success with assemblies open to parents and family.
