Troy is a Detroit suburb known for its highly rated schools, upscale shopping district and diverse residents. With a population of around 87,000, it is the largest community in Oakland County. When Detroit's growth in the early 20th century led to the development of dozens of ethnic enclaves, Troy quickly became the spot where many Asian and South Asian migrants settled. Today, nearly 30% of residents are foreign-born.
“Many people consider Troy because of our shopping and dining, parks and recreation and facilities, but also for our cultural diversity,” says Councilman Hirak Chanda. “I always joke that if you’re looking to travel the world without spending a penny, you can live in Troy and you can experience many different cultures. That’s one of our greatest strengths.”
This city’s events, houses of worship, dining options and supermarkets reflect this diversity. The Bharatiya Temple, built in the 1980s, was one of the first Hindu temples built in Metro Detroit. It's also the largest in the metro area at about 17,000 square feet. The massive complex includes the Main Pooja Hall, which seats about 600, a multipurpose hall with Yagna facilities and a small apartment for priests and guests. Just minutes from the temple, the Masjid Mahmood mosque serves hundreds of the city's Muslim population.
"It works because we've built this reputation where people are respectful to each other, [despite living] in a world with so much conflict," Chanda says. "Troy is an example of what the world could be a should be."
Troy's location is another draw. This city is traversed by a major highway that provides a direct connection to downtown Detroit. It's also home to a slew of shopping options along Big Beaver, and offers housing options for almost every budget.

Somerset and shopping and dining on Big Beaver
Big Beaver Road is Troy’s primary shopping district. It’s mainly known for housing Somerset Collection, an upscale indoor mall with over 180 shops, including Eddie Bauer, Cartier and Coach. This city’s food scene is nearly as diverse as its residents. From Italian staples at Maggiano's Little Italy to Japanese fare at Benihana, “You can experience pretty much any culture in Troy,” Chanda says. Major grocers include big box stores, as well as independent offerings like Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace and Polish Market.

More than 400 acres of parks for all four seasons
Troy is home to 15 parks spanning over 400 acres. At 96 acres, Firefighters Park is the city’s largest green space and offers an array of athletic fields, a disc golf course, open space and woodlands. Boulan Park, the second largest park, is the place to be for baseball, tennis, pickleball and playgrounds. It will also be home to $9 million regulation-sized cricket field, an initiative that has been pushed by the city’s Asian and Middle Eastern residents for nearly two decades.
“We have a very large Hindu Indian and Asian population, and they have been they have been working on getting a cricket field for about 15 years, so it definitely be widely used,” says Councilman Mark Gunn.
Kids and families can also enjoy the Troy Community Center, which features a full gym, basketball courts and an indoor swimming pool. The Rink at Stine Community Park is a rollerblading rink during summer months and is transformed into an ice skating rink in late November when temperatures begin to drop below freezing.
Golfers can tee up at the Somerset Golf Club, the Sylvan Golf Course and the Sanctuary Lake Golf Course. Fast selling homes on well-kept streets
The city offers a wide mix of single-family homes, condos, apartments and townhomes. Homebuyers will find everything from ranch and split-level homes dating back to the 1960s and 70s to contemporary styles and new builds. Throughout the city, it’s common to see wide streets, sidewalks, quiet cul-de-sacs and manicured front lawns. The spring and summer months bring the city to life with blooming trees and foliage. The median sale price is $460,000, but prices range between $100,000 for a small fixer-upper and $3 million for a move-in ready mansion. Most houses sell between $400,000 and $700,000. Various, family-friendly events throughout the year
Troy Family Daze is one of the city’s largest events, attracting over 20,000 attendees annually. It is kicked off with a naturalization ceremony for new citizens. The three-day festival also features a carnival, international performers, a 5K and a petting zoo.
The Troy Museum & Historic Village and nature preserve also host events throughout the year. “There’s never a weekend there isn’t something happening,” Gunn says. At the Historic Village, programs range from watercolor painting classes to blacksmithing. The weekly Thursday walking group is one of many free opportunities that residents can join. The 100-acre Stage Nature Center also offers a variety of events and classes, including walking tours with a professional Naturalist, an annual Monarch butterfly release and a class introducing visitors to native plants and landscaping.
The Troy Public Library also offers various programs to residents, which is why it is one of the city’s most used buildings. Toddlertime, language clubs and book clubs are among the most popular program offerings. Both Gunn and Chanda note that the city is looking at strategies to build a new library as the current building is out of date.
