An outdoorsy neighborhood on Lake Lawson and Lake Smith
Bayside is one of the seven boroughs of Virginia Beach and is considered a great place for nature lovers. The neighborhood has easy access to Lake Smith, which spans over two miles and connects to Lake Lawson, "where you can enjoy the park, trails, canoeing, and fishing. It’s a big reason for why people move here," says Realtor Judi McArthur with BHHS RW Towne Realty. Wooden boardwalks and trails through the trees make for scenic views around town. Bayside is also near the Joint Expeditionary Base–Little Creek, for those in the military. Students can go to school within the highly rated Virginia Beach City Public School district and spend their weekends outside at the Lake Lawson/Lake Smith Natural Area. Ranch-style homes and lakefront estates mingle on quiet streets flanked by leafy trees and walkable paths.

Various home styles on and off Lake Smith’s shore
It’s worth mentioning that many Bayside homes are primarily brick ranch homes built between the 1940s and 1950s. Three-bedroom ranch-style homes can range between $280,000 and $350,000, where some have been fully renovated, and others maintain their historical features. Residents also live in Colonial-inspired suburban homes with attached two-car garages, which can cost around $500,000. With the lakes making up the heart of the neighborhood, many homes sit along the waterfront, and some have their own private docks or boat launches. North Shore is a luxury community with over 100 properties lining the shores of Lake Smith. Though they vary in style, these waterfront homes have one thing in common: most of them are priced between $600,000 and over $800,000.

Cherry blossoms bloom at Tidewater Arboretum
Outdoorsy residents can explore the Lake Lawson/Lake Smith Natural Area, a 42-acre nature preserve great for spending a day under the sun, walking the trails, or fishing on the pier for largemouth bass and white catfish. The nearby boat ramp lets folks take canoes or kayaks out for a calm day on the lake. At the Tidewater Arboretum, families and their pets can explore cherry blossoms and tulips while they read educational plaques about native plant life. Bayside also has two community centers, the Bayside Recreation Center and the William Farms Recreational Center. “There is always a lot to do at the recreation centers,” McArthur says. William Farms has an indoor pool, a rock-climbing wall, a splash zone and an outdoor skate park. Bayside Recreation Center includes several opportunities for exercise and sports and includes a youth game room and indoor playground. Bayside also hugs the Cypress Point Country Club, which offers public and member tee times, a pool, and the Cypress Bar & Grill.
