Witchduck has bay views, spacious homes and history
Witchduck, a Virginia Beach neighborhood, has full oak trees and uninterrupted views of Witch Duck Bay. “Witchduck Point is a quiet place away from the main 'jet noise' areas that are common in Virginia Beach. The area is well established with large homes that sit on lots with three-quarter acres or more and has a mix of waterfront homes and landside homes,” says Michael Rowland, an associate broker with Creed Realty with over five years of experience. Residents here have easy access to the Haygood Shopping Center and private boating and fishing spots steps away from home. Harriet Frenzel, second vice president of the Witch Duck Civil League and member of the Virginia Beach Historic Preservation Commission, says, “I fell in love with this neighborhood because it has a lot of history, like the story of the Lynnhaven House and infamous Witch of Pungo.” A statue of Grace Sherwood, who was known as the Witch of Pungo after being accused of witchcraft when her neighbor's crops failed, stands outside the Sentara Independence Hospital.
Grand homes with private bay access
Ranch and Colonial Revival homes, many built in the '70s, '80s and '90s, that sit close to the bay often range from $800,000 to well over $1 million. Most have over 2,000 square feet, four or more bedrooms, private piers and plenty of yard space. “The home I sold there was occupied by the original owner. There’s a low turnover rate because people buy these multigenerational homes and stay,” Rowland says. The tall trees surrounding the homes create a barrier that makes residents feel set apart from the rest of the neighborhood. Townhouses and condos sit closer to Independence Boulevard, with three bedrooms and brick exteriors, and often sell for $300,000 to $500,000. “This is a very diverse neighborhood, where you can have politicians, physicians and retired military all on the same block,” Frenzel says.
Princess Anne High is getting a makeover
Kids in Witchduck learn at Pembroke Meadows Elementary before moving on to Independence Middle, both of which earn an A-minus from Niche. Princess Anne High School gets an A-plus and is home to a prestigious International Baccalaureate Program. Rowland mentions the Virginia Beach City Public Schools District is planning a major renovation project for Princess Anne. The school will be torn down and completely rebuilt to give students and teachers an upgraded campus.
Taking the kids to Pembrok Meadows Lake Park
Saw Pen Point Park is a quiet, grassy area within the neighborhood. Locals park on the street or walk over from their homes to picnic in this secluded spot or sit under the trees. Parents take their young ones to Pembroke Meadows Lake Park to have an adventure on the playground equipment or watch birds and turtles suntan on lakeside rocks. The Bayside Area Library has a small collection of books for locals to browse, and they organize fun events for visitors of all ages. Adults can meet up with fellow readers at off-site events like Books & (Coffee) Brews, where readers talk about their favorite titles at a local coffee shop.
Getting groceries and lunch at Haygood Shopping Center
Locals visit the Haygood Shopping Center off Independence Boulevard for their daily needs. Some pick up groceries at the Harris Teeter or go across the street to shop at Lidl. The Egg Bistro serves generous portions of their breakfast, brunch and lunch items. At Noodle Man, customers can watch experienced cooks twist and pull dough into noodles for their Chinese dishes. “I love Noodle Man,” Frenzel says. “Their staff is very friendly, and the place is always busy.” Residents have a quick 10-minute drive to Chesapeake Bay or the Town Center of Virginia Beach, a popular shopping and dining spot near Princess Anne High School that Rowland says acts as the area’s downtown.
Shopping local at Shore Drive Farmers Market
The Lynnhaven Coffee Company organizes the Shore Drive Farmers Market every Saturday. Local vendors fill the Lynnhaven Coffee Shop parking lot to sell everything from handmade jewelry to farm-fresh produce. Six churches fill the area, including the Brooks Baptist Church, which hosts a food pantry on Wednesday evenings from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Driving down I-264 to Virginia Beach
Commuters can drive 13 miles to work in Norfolk or Virginia Beach by connecting onto Interstate 264. The Norfolk International Airport sits 8 miles from the neighborhood, and the Oceana Naval Air Station is 15 miles away, so residents might occasionally hear planes flying overhead.
The Lynnhaven House is frozen in time
The Lynnhaven House is one of Virginia’s oldest and most well-preserved homes. The museum is currently closed for renovations, but Frenzel says it will reopen in 2025 to celebrate its 300th anniversary. Frenzel conducts guided tours to give school groups and curious visitors a glance into the past.
