Situated 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles, Michigan Park is a sought-after neighborhood in Whittier due to its roomy lots. “One thing that people love here is that you can find a good lot,” says e-Homes Realtor Jordan Partida, who grew up in the area. “Many of the properties appeal to people who like to entertain, so you’ll find places with backyards with pools, wet bars or big fireplaces.” The community is sleepy and primarily residential, with tree-lined streets and manicured front lawns. It also has well-regarded schools, including a walkable elementary school. “It’s just a nice, family-oriented neighborhood,” says third-generation Realtor Paul Purunjian, born and raised in Whittier.

Early-to-mid-20th century architecture
The housing in Michigan Park is entirely single-family, with no inventory of condos or townhouses. Homes in the neighborhood are early-to-mid-20th century, with the median year built being 1951. “Architecture here is going to include Craftsmans, Spanish-inspired houses, cottages and a lot of midcentury ranch-style homes,” Partida says. “This is where you’re going to find larger flat lots. It’s hard to come by larger lots in surrounding areas for the prices you’ll find in Michigan Park.” Prices range from around $700,000 to $1.5 million, depending on bedroom count, lot size and state of renovation. Partida says $1 million should get a buyer a three-bedroom, two-bath home on a robustly sized lot.

Ocean View Elementary is a walkable community schools
East Whittier City Elementary School District gets a B-plus from Niche, while Whittier Union High School District gets an A. “Ocean View Elementary is a big draw and walkable within Michigan Park,” Partida says. Ocean View is graded A-minus by Niche, and East Whittier Middle School gets a B-plus. Graded A-minus, California High School has special programs in architecture and engineering, automotive technology, business, health, and hospitality and culinary arts.

Michigan Park is the neighborhood's primary outdoor space
Situated along Michigan Avenue on about 10 acres, Michigan Park is the neighborhood’s primary green space. The park includes outdoor amenities like barbecues, picnic tables and fitness stations. It is family-friendly, with playground equipment and public restrooms. "At any given moment, you're going to see people out walking their dogs or pushing their strollers to the park," Partida says. Michigan Park is about 1 mile from the Whittier Greenway Trail, a recreational path of over 5 miles for pedestrians and cyclists that over a half million people use annually. The greenway includes six stations highlighting the city’s history, growth and development. For a hike into the Puente Hills, the Arroyo Pescadero Trailhead is about 2 miles away via Mar Vista Street. The trails are known to be confusing, so hikers should take a photo of the map at the entrance before embarking on a hike.

Retail and dining destinations along Whittier Boulevard
Michigan Park is primarily residential, but there is shopping and dining along Whittier Boulevard, a busy commercial thoroughfare at the southwestern edge of the neighborhood. There are multiple stores for stocking up on groceries, including Smart & Final Extra, Grocery Outlet and Trader Joe’s. The Quad at Whittier shopping mall has retail shopping like T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Ross Dress for Less. There is national chain dining like Olive Garden and Chili’s along Whittier Boulevard, local chains like The Stand and independent eateries like Sol 626 Latin Kitchen. A few minutes north in Uptown Whittier are shops, restaurants, cafes and bakeries in a small-town setting. No direct highway access and long commute times
Michigan Park lacks direct highway access — it is a 3-mile drive via Whittier Boulevard, also known as state Route 72, to Interstate 605. There are bus routes along major thoroughfares operated by Foothills Transit. For commuters, downtown Los Angeles is about 20 miles northwest via state Route 60 and Interstate 101. “The average drive time is about 45 minutes depending on the time of day, but it can take over an hour-and-half at rush hour,” Partida says. About 20 miles away, Long Beach Airport is the closest, but for international travel, Los Angeles International is about 30 miles away, a sneaky long drive that can take over two hours during unpredictable rush hours. The closest medical facility is Whittier Hospital Medical Center, about 2 miles away via La Cuarta Street.
