Make Social Distancing Bearable with These Dream Home Amenities

Despite feeling “stuck” at home due to the coronavirus outbreak, many people are finding ways to entertain themselves in a period of social distancing. Whether it’s being a nosy neighbor during this time (we’re all a little bit guilty) or trying your hand at something new like latte art or macrame, our curiosity hasn’t ceased. In fact, Homes.com was curious enough to find out what dream amenities people would want in their home while self-quarantining. We surveyed over 400 people to find out what their social distancing must-haves are and we’ll also reveal which ones didn’t make the cut.

Coming in at first place for the overall best amenity to have in your home– a theater. Forty-three percent of respondents said an in-home movie theater would make social distancing the most bearable. Harry Potter marathon, anyone? Second place went to a salt cave with 21% of respondents choosing it as their dream amenity while an arcade room only took the hearts of 14%. A wine cellar came in second-to-last with 12% of votes and a sports facility, like a soccer field or basketball court, only caught 10% of our respondent’s eyes as being a social distancing must-have.

However, if it wasn’t up to you and you left it for your children to decide, the answers were a bit different, and a lot more fun! Of the survey respondents, 257 said they had kids running around, so the parents got to step in their shoes and decide how they would be best entertained. A whopping 73% would include a water park in or on their property for the little ones. Only 12% thought a trampoline park would be ideal to pass the time while laser tag and a candy store both came in with only 6% of votes. The remaining 3% of kiddos dream of having a Disney-themed Princess room.

Tobogan, water slide, summer vacation fun activities

Out of the 441 respondents, 317 said they’re in self-quarantine with a pet, so how would they adjust their dream amenities for their furry friends? Thirty percent said their pet’s ideal add-on would be a sunroom, perfect for social-distancing from their owner who now happens to be around all day, every day. Second to that, with 28% of votes, is an extra large play park. A paw-free treat dispenser, private backyard lake and a squeaky ball pit came in with only 19%, 17%, and 6%, respectively.

Let’s say you’re tired of being stuck indoors and want a change of scenery, what amenity would you choose to add onto your home? Fifty-six percent of respondents said the best change of scenery would be with a private lake they can read and relax by at their leisure. Continuing in that vein of relaxation, 27% would want their own vineyard to take long strolls through during the day. Only 10% would add a moat to kayak around in and 4% want their personal obstacle course to reenact American Ninja Warrior. Coming in last would be an indoor skydiving simulator with only 3% of votes.

No matter how you’d spend your time in social distancing, or what amenities you’d choose to add to your dream home, it’s important to remember that you’re not alone through this. While we hope these survey results can entertain your imagination for just a little bit, we also want to tool you with all of the resources you need to stay productive, healthy, and happy during these uncertain times.
