The gridded, tree-shaded streets of Sunset are home to over 3,000 Boiseans, about 1 mile northwest of downtown. This primarily residential neighborhood sits immediately south of the Boise foothills and west of the historic North End. While the North End is known for its historic, meticulously maintained homes, Sunset features similarly longstanding abodes without stringent upkeep standards. “We have a great mix of housing that provides a wonderful diversity without the historical restrictions of the North End,” says Sunset Hills Neighborhood Association President Michelle Doane, a 12-year resident. “There are lots of newer families coming in, which is great.”

From two-bedroom ramblers to larger new builds
Doane describes Sunset’s housing stock as “eclectic.” With no homeowners association, residents can decorate and modify their dwellings freely. The neighborhood’s variety of architectural styles adds to its eclecticism. Ranch-style and Craftsman houses appear frequently, some dating to the early 1900s. Craftsman and Prairie-style design sensibilities also appear in new builds, while others adhere to New Traditional standards. Two-bedroom ranch-style homes under 1,000 square feet start in the mid-$300,000s. For the median local price of about $560,000, homebuyers might find a three-bedroom rambler over 1,500 square feet. New builds nearing 3,000 square feet — including three- and four-bedroom Craftsman-style houses — can top $1.1 million.

Fields, dog enclosures and miles of trails
The neighborhood shares its name with Sunset Park, a centrally located, 10-acre green space. Athletes can visit the park to use its open sports fields and four tennis courts. Younger visitors can enjoy Sunset Park’s partially covered playground while four-legged frequenters socialize in the 4-acre off-leash area. Hillside to Hollow Reserve covers 260 acres immediately north of the neighborhood. This nature area at the base of the Boise foothills features dirt paths with unparalleled views of the city and the mountains. Locals who’d prefer to burn calories indoors can visit the neighborhood’s Idaho Fitness Factory location 24 hours a day.

Schools serving Boise for over a century
Roughly a half-dozen public schools in the Boise School District serve Sunset kids and teens. Most households to the north are zoned for Taft Elementary and Hillside Junior High; students to the south attend Lowell Elementary and North Junior High. Taft Elementary has a C-plus Niche score, while Lowell Elementary and Hillside Junior High have B-pluses, and North Junior High has an A. Lowell Elementary students can study the school’s Apollo 14 Moon Tree near the corner of Lemp and 28th streets. “It was taken up to space during the Apollo program, brought back and planted,” Doane says. Boise High School, also rated an A, accommodates over 1,500 tenth through 12th graders. Students become part of a school legacy dating over 120 years and can participate in 70-plus clubs. They can also boast about attending the No. 3 public high school in Idaho, according to Niche.

Neighborhood cleanups, Easter egg hunts and more
The Sunset Neighborhood Association hosts events year-round “to draw our neighbors out,” Doane says. “We do neighborhood cleanups that people like to come to and National Night Out — which, of course, is nationally known — where we try to do a fried chicken feed.” Several local churches also host frequent events, especially Vertical Church near the park.

"It's pretty easy to bike to downtown"
Valley Regional Transit services bus stops along State Street. Commuters throughout Sunset can usually ride their bikes to work within 15 minutes. “We’re pretty level,” Doane says of the neighborhood’s incline. “It’s pretty easy to bike to downtown Boise. Even the North End has its great little community you can bike to from here, Hyde Park.”

"Boise-famous" international eats
State Street, a prominent Boise business corridor leading to downtown, runs alongside Sunset to the south. It’s home to businesses like Kibrom’s Ethiopian & Eritrean Cuisine, which Doane says has become “Boise-famous” since opening in 2016. A few blocks southeast, Fireside Inn has welcomed neighbors to play pool and darts over ice-cold brews since 1975. “It hosts fun activities and draws good crowds for shuffleboard and stuff like that,” Doane adds. Alyonka Russian Cuisine opened in the neighborhood’s southeast corner in 2005 and is best known for its beef stroganoff. Its pelmeni — lamb-filled Russian dumplings — earned a national spotlight when Guy Fieri visited the restaurant on “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” in 2023. Many locals are within walking distance of an Albertsons supermarket in the neighborhood’s southwest section.

Public transportation is very limited. Local politics are extremely conservative. Many improvement opportunities are never implemented because they never get off of the ground (passed by city council)
