Those visiting North Riverdale for the first time might forget they were in The Bronx, much less New York City. The neighborhood is a picturesque and charming residential enclave in the northwest part of the Bronx. Stationed atop the hills along the eastern bank of the Hudson River, this neighborhood is known for its natural beauty, tree-lined avenues, and Victorian country estates. Strolling through its leafy streets, residents might be surprised to think, “I can’t believe this is New York City.” It is quieter than its central counterpart, Riverdale, being primarily residential, with some shops and stores peppered along Riverdale Avenue. Cultural diversity thrives here, with a blend of traditions from Irish Catholic roots and an influx of families from the Orthodox Jewish community. With over 40% of the population over 65 – more than double the national average – there are several communities just for seniors, including The Hebrew Home, RiverSpring Assisted Living and Atria Senior Living.

Predominantly co-ops close to the Hudson River
The neighborhood’s tree-shaded streets provide residents with many housing options, meeting potential homebuyers’ needs. Co-op complexes and detached single-family homes, which are often multiple stories and built of red brick, are both common in the neighborhood. A one-bedroom co-op in North Riverdale can start as low as $150,000, while a two-bedroom can range from $250,000 to $450,000. On the other hand, single-family homes generally cost between $750,000 and $1.6 million, though larger historic mansions in the area can fetch up to $8 million. “There is not much of a distance between Riverdale and North Riverdale; they bleed into each other,” says Maria Capotorto, associate real estate broker at Douglas Elliman.“North Riverdale is known for its many co-ops, while central Riverdale is known for its large, expensive single-family homes.”

Dubbed “the jewel of North Riverdale” by locals, Barbeque Pit served up baby back ribs cooked directly on the rack, whole roasted chicken and homemade pies. On Riverdale Drive, Mexican eatery Tobalá is known for its upscale Oaxacan dishes, like duck mole negro. On weekends, there isn’t an empty seat at tables or the bar, which fills up with couples on dates, friend groups and birthday parties. Live music accompanies creative cocktails and Pan-Latin small plates at Tin Marín Tapas. For groceries, residents can shop at the local supermarkets, including C-Town, Cherry Valley or Key Food. There’s also Riverdale Kosher Market, which caters to the many neighborhood residents in the Jewish community. Realistically, residents can make do with limited local options, but if they want more variety, they go down to Riverdale or Manhattan.

Locally by car and to the city by train
Most households have at least one, if not two, cars to get around locally. However, it is still more efficient to take public transportation into Manhattan. Locals rely on the Hudson Rail Link, a weekday shuttle bus service between the Spuyten Duvyil and Riverdale Metro-North stations. From Riverdale Station, the Metro-North Train Hudson line takes commuters 13 miles to Grand Central Station in about 30 minutes. Express buses and the major thoroughfares Henry Hudson Parkway and I-87, which run through the Riverdale area, make it quick and easy to drive into Manhattan or New Jersey.
Although most residents of North Riverdale have cars the Hudson Rail Link is utilized daily.
The Riverdale station can have residents to Manhattan in minutes.
