Murray Hill co-op off Northern Boulevard

Located in the Murray Hill section of Flushing, Hunter Gardens is a six-story brick co-op off Northern Boulevard. Built in 1950, there are 216 units in this complex in a busy, diverse neighborhood. The mid-rise resembles many others nearby. Flanked by overgrown trees at the entrance with evergreen hedges, a white wrought iron balcony over the front door is one of the few decorative flourishes. Behind the complex, residents have a neatly trimmed lawn area with hedges. Recently sold units include a 900-square-foot one-bedroom, one-bathroom for $350,000 in January 2025, and a 1,200-square-foot two-bedroom, one-bathroom for $457,000 in May 2024.

Pet-friendly building with a garden

There is an elevator, a live-in superintendent and laundry facilities on-site. Parking is available is with a waitlist and subletting is allowed after two years of residency. It is a pet-friendly building. As with most co-ops, buyers have to undergo a board interview. When it comes to co-ops versus condos in Flushing, “Co-ops can be difficult. But it’s also more affordable,” says Jasper Champagne, an international real estate specialist at eXp Realty.?? However, “if you look at the property values of co-ops in?Flushing,?the property value hasn’t significantly grown over time compared to how condos have grown over time.”

Interior details with a view

One of the benefits of living at Hunter Gardens is the view of the green space from the residences. The layout of the units with large windows allows plenty of natural light in. Hardwood flooring is found throughout the units. One-bedroom units are around 900-square-feet, and two-bedroom units are around 1,200-square-feet. The condition of the residences will vary, and some have been updated to reflect modern aesthetics with granite kitchen countertops and updated bathrooms. The bathrooms feature a bath and shower combination. The kitchens are galley style with cabinetry on both sides. The layout of the living room space is large enough to fit a dining set or a home office in both the one and two-bedroom units. As it was built in 1950, it retains prewar elements. The closets are on the larger side while the windows have moldings.

Living in Murray Hill

While Flushing is international with east and south Asian influences as well as Latino businesses, this stretch of Northern Boulevard in Murray Hill features a bevy of Korean eateries and specialty shops. For marinated bulgogi and short ribs, there’s Jeong Yook Korean BBQ or Hahm Hi Bach Korean BBQ. Jeju Island is known for its Korean sushi that’s decidedly different from its Japanese counterpart. Known as Kimbap, the rolls are larger and made from cooked meats and vegetables rolled in seaweed. There’s also K-Munchies on Northern Boulevard right near the building for snack cravings from Korean corn dogs to twisted bread. Hangyang Mart 150 Street and Northern Boulevard has a wide selection of meats, vegetables and Asian staples. Closer to the complex, Hengtong Grocery and T&Y Grocery are convenient grocery stops. Korean spas are relaxation spots for sauna and massages and there are several nearby, including New York Spa and Sauna Best Spa. Voelker Orth Museum is a1890s home and garden that has become a museum. The site was owned by a German immigrant family and its mission is to preserve and interpret the cultural and horticultural heritage of Flushing and adjacent communities.

Travel options

Several bus lines are on Northern Boulevard including the Q12, Q28 lines to Bayside and Q58 to College Point. The 7 subway line on Main Street in Flushing is just over a mile away, or a 25-minute walk, as is the LIRR Main Street Flushing Station. It takes about 30 minutes on the 7 line to get to Midtown Manhattan. The Grand Central Parkway and Whitestone Expressway are nearby for travel in and out of Queens.
