Find adventure everywhere in Tyner
Tyner residents never get bored with its proximity to the Tennessee River, Hamilton Place shopping mall and downtown Chattanooga. “The location is what draws people in. You get the quiet of the neighborhood and you can be shopping or sitting on the river in less than 10 minutes,” says Tenesha Irvin, a Realtor and team lead with Keller Williams Realty who has over a decade of experience in the Chattanooga area. “There are museums, bars, restaurants, and a pedestrian bridge downtown that you can get to in 20 minutes or less.” Commuters appreciate how close major employers are, like the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, which is 12 miles away, and the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport, which is right next to Tyner. While the distance is convenient, residents do have to deal with the noise from the airport on a daily basis. Other than this, Tyner offers a tranquil suburb with plenty of outdoor and indoor recreation.
Children’s museums and Chattanooga concerts
The Tennessee Aquarium and the Creative Discovery Museum—a children’s museum—are two favored family hotspots downtown. At the aquarium, people can pet stingrays or walk through the indoor butterfly garden that houses more than 1,000 butterflies. Children can get an adventure and parents can catch a break at the children’s museum, where museum-goers interact with exhibits, like digging in a sandpit for dinosaur bones. On the weekends, couples can call their babysitter and catch a concert at Barrelhouse Ballroom, or a theatre show at Choo Choo Centennial Theatre. Afterwards, they can have a nightcap at The Bitter Alibi or Backstage Bar.
Leisurely walks and line dancing
Longtime residents enjoy popular pastimes like kayaking and canoeing on the Tennessee River. The Chickamauga Dam Day Use Area is a nearby, roped-off area where swimmers can relax in the water or on the beach. It also has nature trails for leisure strolls along the water. Downtown Chattanooga is home to the 1890s Walnut Street Bridge, another go-to spot where locals can walk or run along the river. People partake in sports and activities for all ages like pickleball, basketball and line dancing at Tyner Community Center, the neighborhood indoor recreation destination. “Since Tyner is a very quiet area, it’s a great place for retired people and young families,” says Irvin. Golfers must go outside Tyner to reach courses like Brown Acres Golf Course.
Homes with modest lots and maple trees
Tyner is full of 1960s and 70s ranch-style homes ranging from $260,000 to $500,000 and contemporary brick houses with two-car garages ranging from $450,000 to $600,000. They are usually surrounded by mature oaks and maple trees and have modest-sized lots. On average, homes sell after 27 days on the market compared to the national average of 42 days. “Most homes are priced right and in good condition, so they sell pretty quickly,” Irvin says.
Renovations at Hamilton County Public Schools
Public school students may attend schools such as Bess T. Shepherd Elementary School, which receives a C-plus from Niche, before advancing to Tyner Middle Academy. The school also has a C-plus. Kids can finish public school at Tyner Academy High School, which earns a C-plus and is currently being renovated along with Tyner Middle Academy, with the completion of the merging of both schools projected for the Fall of 2024. The highly regarded Boyd Buchanan private school earns an A-minus from Niche and serves students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grades. Those who practice certain religions will find themselves visiting Tyner United Methodist Church or St. Stephen Catholic Church when they can.
Large shopping malls and Mississippi magic
Tyner is home to nationally known chains like Publix and Walmart. For some retail therapy, shoppers head to Hamilton Place shopping mall, which is full of upscale department stores such as Belk and Dillard’s. “It used to be the biggest indoor mall in Tennessee,” Irvin says. “And It keeps on ticking. It’s not a ghost town yet.” People can enjoy ribs or a pulled pork plate at Ooo Wee Barbecue—where one patron says the sauce is so good, he almost asked for a straw to drink it—on Bonny Oaks Drive. Champy’s is a local favorite for fried chicken and hot tamales. Decorated with license plates and signed dollar bills, the restaurant claims its cuisine is the direct result of 40 years of family secrets and Mississippi Delta magic.
Ride the bus down Bonny Oaks Drive
Interstate 75 helps drives get around Tyner and reach downtown Chattanooga. Commuters have access to their desired destinations by hopping on the many bus stops along Bonny Oaks Drive. Frequent flyers have an easy route to the neighboring Chattanooga Airport.
