Community seeing major revitalization through Columbus city plan
A multimillion-dollar redevelopment plan is breathing new life into East Linden. As part of a blueprint laid out by the City of Columbus, locals are reaping the benefits of refurbished homes, a fresh produce market and a massive recreational center. John Bolon, local Realtor with Red 1 Realty, says he’s witnessed the improvements. “It’s an up-and-coming area. I’ve seen the revitalization of homes in that area, and properties have been cleaned up. People are just putting money back into the community, which is an admirable value.”
Refurbished 20th century homes
Some of those upgrades include new roofing, front porches and a fresh coat of paint on the community’s single-family homes. A mix of American Foursquares, bungalows and National-style homes built in the 1940s and 1950s sit tightly packed on sidewalk-lined streets. The homes rarely exceed 1,000 square feet and are occasionally flanked by unpaved driveways. Many residents choose to park along the sides of the slightly uneven streets. Front yards are petite, but backyards are much more spacious, dotted with trees and usually fenced-in to provide some privacy and separation from neighbors. It’s rare for a home in East Linden to be listed for more than $200,000, with most prices hovering between $140,000 and $190,000.

Route 3 links locals to major interstates
Many residents rely on the Central Ohio Transit Authority, or COTA, to get around the city. There are multiple stops along East Hudson Street and Cleveland Avenue. East Linden’s proximity to Cleveland Avenue, or Route 3, will eventually connect residents to Interstates 71 and 670. “You’re probably 10 or 15 minutes from downtown Columbus,” Bolon says. Locals living in East Linden are about 4 miles from The Ohio State University and Wexner Medical Center. Neighbors frequently head to Ohio Stadium to join more than 100,000 screaming fans cheering on the Buckeyes. Bolon adds, “People looking to travel can also get to the airport quickly, in less than 15 minutes. East Linden is in a sweet little spot.”
Community efforts to mitigate crime
Crime is an issue in East Lindon. It has a CAP Index Crime Score of 8 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4 out of 10. The Lindon Community Plan includes several programs to mitigate crime, including expanding housing options for residents, addressing issues and providing education in early childhood and building community investment.
STEM programs offered through Columbus City School District
Public school students have several magnet school options within the Columbus City School District. Linden STEM Academy, which Niche rates a C-minus, teaches from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Seventh through 12th graders can attend Linden-McKinley STEM Academy. The school offers three career-tech certification programs focused on engineering and robotics. Niche rates the school a D-plus. Students may also attend East Linden Elementary and Medina Middle schools, each with a C-minus rating from Niche.

Local restaurants make national TV appearance
Made famous on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Ena’s Caribbean Kitchen’s renowned jerk chicken captured the attention of Guy Fieri, who filmed an episode there in 2017. The no-frills, locally-owned restaurant sits along Cleveland Avenue. While jerk chicken is the most popular dish, locals rave about the oxtail, red snapper and cornbread. To help those living below the poverty line struggling during the pandemic, a vacant grocery store was transformed into a food pantry, The Linden Fresh Market, which offers fresh produce and a free pharmacy. Residents will find The Linden Fresh Market less than 2 miles south along Cleveland Avenue. Locals can find additional grocery essentials at the Save A Lot, less than a mile south on Mock Road.
Community center doubles in size
One of the first projects the city took on was the Linden Community Center, which reopened in 2021 at nearly double the size of the original. At 55,0000 square feet, the recreational hub just west of the neighborhood features an indoor basketball court, fitness room and elevated walking track. Visitors can also express their creativity in the arts and ceramics room or learn new skills through cooking classes. The Veggie Van visits every Thursday, bringing fresh fruits and vegetables through a mobile farmers market. An outdoor park sits adjacent to the community center, with a playground, tennis courts, a walking path and a pond stocked with fish. The entrance to Joan Park sits between two houses on Myrtle Avenue. The 4-acre green space is surrounded by homes, giving residents who live in them an easy way to get fresh air along paved walking trails. There is also a playground and basketball court. Shaded picnic tables sit nearby where friends and family can gather, or parents can relax while kids play.
