From military base to Denver master-planned community
Located east of Denver, Lowry sits in the footprint of what, for over 60 years, was the Lowry Air Force Base. After the base closed in 1994—and the preceding cleanup and base transferring procedures that concluded in 2006—the Lowry Economic Redevelopment Authority transformed the land. Over 4,500 new homes were added, and many Air Force hangers and officer buildings were repurposed for shopping, dining and recreation. “The Lowry Economic Redevelopment Authority made sure to preserve open space in the neighborhood,” says Ann Torgerson, a local Realtor with Home Smart, who has over two decades of experience and was a part of the redevelopment authority. “Sidewalks are one of the other nice things in our neighborhood that I really like. They made all the sidewalks wider, probably about 3 feet, to accommodate both bikes and walkers or runners, which is a nice feature.”

Converted Air Force buildings and single-family homes
Colonial-inspired new traditional and Craftsman houses are in subdivisions. “These houses were all built around the year 2000, but they were developed in such a way that they tie into the older neighborhoods as you drive west,” Torgerson says. “They made sure to plant many deciduous trees, a lot of oak and maple trees, to, again, tie it in.” Depending on property size and proximity to S. Monaco Street Parkway, prices range from $700,000 to $1.7 million. Modern homes with a combination of stone and wood siding are listed between $1.4 million and $2.3 million. Townhouses, some of which feature narrow alleys between buildings, considered row homes, were built in traditional and modern architectural styles. New traditional townhouses start at $155,000 for midcentury constructions and go to $800,000 for townhouses built after Lowry’s redevelopment. Meanwhile, modern townhouses go from $785,000 to $1.7 million. Buildings once used as officer housing on the former base today have since shifted into apartments. “Apartments have a higher amount of brick on them than other apartments here would, too, because we had consistent architectural requirements whether they’re townhouses, apartments or commercial buildings. They also had to have a certain amount of exterior brick and other landscaping requirements to make sure it all flows with the neighborhood.” Monthly rent in apartments fall between $1,300 and $3,700.

Learning and International Baccalaureate programming in Lowry
Lowry is part of Colorado’s SchoolChoice program, meaning students have the opportunity to enroll in schools outside of respective zoning districts. The neighborhood’s zoned schools within the Denver Public Schools system include Lowry Elementary School, Hill Campus of Arts & Sciences and George Washington High School. Lowry Elementary earns a B-minus grade from Niche, while Hill maintains a B-plus. George Washington High receives an A-minus and offers International Baccalaureate (IB) programming. The Community College of Aurora is also in the neighborhood and provides training in both EMT and firefighting.
Lowry Elementary School is a public pre-K and elementary school in Lowry.
George Washington High School is a public high school in Washington Virginia Vale.

Lowry Sports Complex, indoor ice rink and playgrounds
Lowry Sports Complex spans nearly 800 acres including two turf fields and four grass fields marked for soccer and lacrosse. At the park’s entrance, Jackie Robinson Fields Park has two softball fields and a baseball diamond. There’s also a playground, four tennis courts and two basketball courts nearby. Over 2 miles of dirt trail, imprinted with bike treads, paw and shoe prints, loop around Westerly Creek Dam, overlooking the sports fields, Lowry Dog Park and the Front Range in the horizon. The trails lead east to the CommonGround Golf Course, a public course and home to the Colorado Golf Association.Big Bear Ice Arena, adjacent to the park, was converted from a Lowry Air Force Base hangar and offers public skate times and lessons. It also hosts hockey leagues year-round. Great Lawn Park’s sundial casts a shadow over its open space, surrounded by a paved path. Additional parks dot the community, including Crescent Park, with a playground and open space, and Sunset Park, which has a playground and amphitheater where films are projected in the summer during the Movie in the Park series.
The enormous Lowry Sports Complex Park is the crown jewel of parks in Lowry.
The Big Bear Ice Arena, in the Lowry neighborhood, is open year-round for public skating.

Hangars housing offices and restaurants with shopping nearby
Lowry Town Center has a Safeway and other local stores, including Kismet Boutique and Timbuk Toys. Casual dining options such as The Delectable Egg and Chop Shop Casual Urban Eatery also line the center. Hangar 2 was converted into office space and a dining district that houses the Lowry Beer Garden, where wooden tables and benches are illuminated by string lights as the sun sets. “On a Friday night, it’s packed. It’s popular because it’s very lowkey. You go up and order everything yourself, and it’s all ages,” Torgerson says. “By the beer garden, there’s a rocket ship from a Burning Man Festival, and they put Rocket Ice Cream shop in the base, so you’ve got ice cream right there, and that’s a nice addition for families.” The community pays tribute to Lowry Air Force Base with monuments such as a full-size Boeing B-52 that sits adjacent to the beer garden. The Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum has exhibits that include insights about spacecrafts and civilian aircrafts. “Even the 24 Hour Fitness is a newer building, but they put a metal arch in to evoke the hangar, to tie it all together, or at least architecturally give it continuity.”

Traveling around Lowry via boulevards, interstates and RTD
Roundabouts dot East Lowry Boulevard, a local thoroughfare that runs west to Quebec Street and east to Interstate 225. Alameda Avenue also intersects Quebec Street and I-225, both of which lead north to Interstate 70, which connects the community with the Denver International Airport (DEN) in around 16 miles. Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus stops line Lowry Boulevard and Quebec Street, with routes leading approximately 7 miles west to Denver’s downtown. Anschutz Medical Campus includes the UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital, around 5 miles northeast. East Sixth Avenue is just a residential road lined with trees in Lowry, but as it runs west, it eventually becomes a freeway to the foothill communities, which are nearly 20 miles away. The historic Eisenhower Chapel is a prominent house of worship in the community that was built in the 1940s for enlistees, that was also frequented by former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his wife, former First Lady, Mamie Eisenhower. “When Lowry was in its heyday for the Air Force, Eisenhower was our president, his wife was from Denver, so they spent summers here, and Lowry was known as the ‘Summer White House,’” Torgerson says. The chapel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
