A small residential area with a park and nearby amenities
Avalon is a small residential neighborhood in Northwest Albuquerque on the west side of the Rio Grande River. Central Avenue Northwest, a portion of historic U.S. Route 66, runs along one side of the neighborhood, and Interstate 40 is on the opposite side. Avalon has its own park and trail, and shopping and schools are within several miles.
Avalon Park has a playground popular with the kids.
Interstate 40 runs along the north edge of Avalon.

Route 66, I-40, the Central & Unser Transit Center
Avalon is walkable, with sidewalks, but due to the Albuquerque's size and sprawl, traveling long distances by foot is not ideal. Many cycle or use public transportation, such as the free bus system, ABQ RIDE. The Central & Unser Transit Center is conveniently located by the library, and there are other bus stops along Central Avenue. The Sun Van Paratransit service is available for qualifying residents.
It's about 7 miles to the Alvarado Transportation Center and the Downtown Albuquerque Rail Runner Station for the express commuter train and Amtrak. Albuquerque International Sunport serves the region and is approximately 12 miles from Avalon.
The Central and Unser Transit Center is convenient for Avalon residents.
Route 66 is at the south end of the Avalon neighborhood.

Contemporary and manufactured homes in Avalon
Contemporary homes dating from the late 1990s to the 2000s are most common. Sizes range from 1,200 to 2,200 square feet. Attached two-car garages are standard, and some properties include covered patios, solar panels, drought-tolerant plants and hardscaping. In a 12-month period before late December 2024, 14 homes had sold in Avalon. They were priced from the mid-$200,000s to the low-$300,000s, generally based on square footage. "People move to Albuquerque from other big metro areas because you get way more house for your money here," says Sharon Stelzer, an associate broker with Red Fox Realty. Avalon also has some manufactured home communities. A two-bedroom manufactured home for sale in late 2024 listed for $115,000.
Most Avalon homes have small front yards and are single story.

Avalon Park, an aquatic center, the BioPark and petroglyphs nearby
Avalon Park, within walking distance of neighborhood homes, features a playground, tennis court and fields. The Central Avenue Project, in association with the Together for Brothers organization, has hosted community engagement gatherings at the park to bring together neighbors. The Avalon Trail intersects the park and is about a half-mile long, linking Jetty Court Northwest to Bluewater Road Northwest. Longer hiking trails are found throughout the Petroglyph National Monument, a national park with ancient carved volcanic rocks. The park is over 7,200 acres, but there are trailheads a few miles from Avalon.
The West Mesa Aquatic Center, an indoor/outdoor city facility with an Olympic-sized pool and slide pools, is also several miles away. To the east, across the Rio Grande River, there's the ABQ BioPark, which includes an aquarium, zoo and gardens. North of the BioPark is the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park, popular for hiking trails through the Bosque, a riverside forest full of cottonwood trees.
Avalon Park is a place for locals to play and enjoy the fresh air.
Petroglyph National Monument is close and is a protected historical and natural wonder.

Nuevo Atrisco food park, Coors Boulevard's restaurants and stores
A unique feature of the neighborhood is the Nuevo Atrisco food park, an indoor/outdoor venue for micro-restaurants and food trucks. It opened in 2024, with vendors including NM Melt Co, Sumo Strips, SW Smash Burger, Roadrunner 66 and Brews at 7921.
A Smith's grocery store is a couple of miles east, and within 5 miles, there's a Walmart Neighborhood Market and a Walmart Supercenter. Various casual dining restaurants and chain stores are located along Coors Boulevard Northwest. The two largest malls in New Mexico, Coronado Center and Cottonwood Mall, are about 11 miles from the neighborhood.
Nuevo Atrisco is a food truck concept with a casual area to relax and enjoy a variety of food and beverage options.
Walmart is a short drive away on Coors Blvd .

Events like Balloon Fiesta, activities at Central & Unser Library
The biggest annual event in Albuquerque is the international Balloon Fiesta, the largest ballooning event in the world. Over 500 hot-air balloons fill the skies as 80,000 people attend this nine-day October event. Balloon Fiesta Park, which includes the Golf & Event Center, the Sid Cutter Pilots' Pavilion and the Anderson Abruzzo Balloon Museum, is about 15 miles from Avalon. Other big events include Old Town's Albuquerque Birthday Celebration in April and the Holiday Stroll and Tree Lighting in December. Nob Hill hosts a Pride Parade and the Route 66 Summerfest.
Closer to home, Central & Unser Public Library hosts events such as musical performances and Sunday movie showings. Children's activities include a craft club, a playdate group and summer reading programs.
Families love the River of Lights, held ever December at the Bio Park Botanical Gardens.
Colorful hot air balloons fill the October sky during the annual Intentional Balloon Fiesta.

Public schools include STEM-focused West Mesa High
Public schools include Painted Sky Elementary School, which earns a B-minus grade from Niche, and Jimmy Carter Middle School, which receives a C-minus. West Mesa High School has a C-plus grade, and its STEM program is highly regarded. Extracurricular activities include Ballet Folklorico and Mustang Amigos, a club that promotes inclusivity. The NJROTC air rifle and drill teams have won championships.
Albuquerque Public Schools district has a variety of magnet or choice schools to which students can apply. The University of New Mexico, Carrington College and Central New Mexico Community College are within 9 miles of Avalon.
Nurturing young minds and fostering creativity is the Painted Sky Elementary School credo.
West Mesa High School is the home of the Mustangs.

Industrial sites and facilities close to home
The Ken Sanchez Transit Facility on Daytona Road is a hub for employees of the city's bus system, ABQ RIDE. There's also a FedEx facility and other manufacturing or transportation-related businesses. Clifford West Business Park has a restaurant supply store and a furniture distribution center. Additionally, the business park is home to several houses of worship.
