Affordable childcare at West Mesa Community Center
The West Mesa Community Center is in the middle of the neighborhood, with open pickleball and basketball courts, a variety of classes and childcare. “It’s really affordable, so parents utilize us a lot,” Cordova says. “It’s only $10 for childcare for the whole school year, and we transport kids to and from school with our city vehicles.” Staff accompany children to both Lavaland Elementary and John Adams Middle, though childcare programming is open to families across the city.A network of paved trails that run beside the interstate leads from the neighborhood to the west bank of the Rio Grande. Nearby Pat Hurley Park consists of two smaller green spaces connected by a walking path that weaves through both, adding up to more than a mile. Both areas have playgrounds, and the more elevated of the two offers views of Albuquerque’s skyline in front of the rugged Sandia Mountains. The park is also home to two playgrounds, four pickleball and two tennis courts.
Breakfast options are available at long-time West Mesa diners
Local restaurants line both Central Avenue and Coors Boulevard. Mac’s La Sierra Family Restaurant sits along the former, marked by a sign topped with a plastic, pot-bellied cow. The restaurant has been a neighborhood fixture since 1952, and its extensive menu includes steak and chops, breakfast dishes and Mexican cuisine. “I really love Weck’s, which is right around the corner from the community center," Cordova says. Its breakfast menu, which is served until 2 p.m. and comes in light and gluten-free versions, consists of “full belly” omelets, hash browns doused with red or green chile, pancakes, waffles, eggs Benedict and breakfast burritos. A Walmart Supercenter is immediately north of the neighborhood, while El Super, another grocery store, is to the east. From Pueblo-style cottages to homes on a third of an acre
Homes in West Mesa come at a variety of price points. Cottages and small Pueblo-style homes built throughout the 1940s and 1950s range from $185,000 to $270,000. These homes come with private backyards—often with paved, shaded patios—though some properties in this price range may need upgrades or renovations. The 1960s and 1970s in West Mesa brought a wave of brick ranch-style homes on larger lots that cost between $230,000 and $290,000. Two-story new traditional homes with tuck-under garages and properties on lots up to a third of an acre in size fetch between $325,000 and $465,000.Wide range of visual arts and technical classes at West Mesa High
Neighborhood children may attend Lavaland Elementary School, which receives a C-minus grade from Niche and is less than a mile from most homes in the neighborhood. They may then move forward to John Adams Middle School, which earns a C. They may conclude their secondary studies at West Mesa High School—earning a C-plus—and choose from a variety of courses. Visual arts classes in computer graphics, digital film production and photography come in a range of levels, while career technical education pathways include advanced manufacturing and process development, computing for the common good and military science.West Mesa is between two commercial corridors and Interstate 40
West Mesa is located near several important western Albuquerque thoroughfares. Interstate 40 connects the neighborhood to downtown, which is about 5 miles away, and crosses the state from east to west. Central Avenue also leads to downtown, while Coors Boulevard travels throughout the city’s western suburbs. Both are major commercial corridors for the neighborhood. ABQ RIDE buses stop along both roads, taking passengers to other western Albuquerque neighborhoods and across the river to downtown.
