From “Black Water” to modern countryside escape
In 1891, workers drilling for natural gas outside of Buffalo discovered a miracle: water so rich in minerals it could cure almost any disease. For the next several decades, the town of Alden was built around the area’s “Black Water Baths,” which reportedly could cure everything from muscle pain to anxiety. While the region’s black water industry ended by the 1960s, the town of Alden remains and continues to be loved by residents for its unique homes, local businesses and the scenery of the surrounding countryside. The area is divided into a bustling village and more remote farmland, offering something for every resident. “You have the greatness of country but are minutes from anything you want. I have friends who were born and raised there, and they never want to leave,” says Susan Hergenroder, a licensed real estate salesperson with HUNT Real Estate who has lived and worked in the area for almost 20 years.
Small neighborhoods and large farms both fit in Alden
Popular styles in Alden include Colonial Revival farmhouses, Cape Cods and raised ranches. Residences in the more populated village area are typically built on neat streets with uniform sidewalks and enough space for each property to have a driveway and detached garage. Outside of the village, the most rural parts of Alden are heavily wooded, and houses here are separated from their neighbors by wide swaths of green space. Alden has a limited number of homes with a wide price range, starting at $200,000 and going up to $600,000 for properties built on several acres of land. “These last few years, anything that comes up is usually sold between one and four weeks. It’s great demand, but not much of an inventory,” Hergenroder says.

Also on Broadway is a variety of restaurants, like Blackwater Tavern & Tap. This pub serves wings, steak and hot sandwiches alongside a variety of beers, many of which have been sourced from New York breweries. Down the street, Alden Bakery and Café serves a rotating menu of coffee drinks and lunch specials like hot sandwiches and pierogis.

Broadway connects to the region
While this rural community is not directly next to any highways, Broadway is a major road that runs through the area and connects to U.S. Route 20, New York Route 90 and Interstate 90. Alden is 22 miles from Buffalo and due to the distance from the city, the town is removed from public transportation routes that serve the rest of Buffalo. As a result, the area is car-dependent.
