Where locals hike, ski and enjoy nature in every season
Outdoor fun is a year-round thing in Turnagain. The 11-mile Tony Knowles Coastal Trail weaves through the neighborhood along the shores of the Knik Arm. You can hop on the path at various points, like Earthquake Park, Lyn Ary Park or Westchester Lagoon. Hiking, biking and running are the main activities in warm weather, but winter brings cross-country skiing to the trail. Westchester Lagoon is popular for activities like kayaking, fishing and bird-watching. It’s open for ice skating during the winter, with free hot chocolate and warming barrels set up in the area. If you’re interested in some friendly competition, Lyn Ary Park has tennis courts, baseball fields and playgrounds for the kids.

A mix of home styles with higher prices than nearby areas
Ranch-style and split-level homes fill the neighborhood streets, surrounded by towering, leafy trees and tall pines. Some luxury custom houses are available, typically close to the water. The lots are usually a quarter-acre or less, giving you space but still making it easy to get to know your neighbors. A combination of factors makes Turnagain more expensive than nearby communities. “It’s one of the more desirable neighborhoods in Anchorage,” says Hutton Brown, a Realtor at Jack White Real Estate with 25 years of experience. “Just for convenience, neighborhood feel and location, it has a higher price per square foot.” Homes under 2,000 square feet cost between the mid-$200,000s and the upper $500,000s. Larger houses can range from the mid-$500,000s to the upper $800,000s.

Convenient commutes with short drives and local bus stops
Turnagain’s convenient location makes it easy to get around the city. Downtown Anchorage is about 4 miles away via Benson Boulevard and A Street. People Mover bus routes stop on several roads in the neighborhood and connect to downtown, the airport, Midtown Mall and the Dimond Center. Despite being so close to the airport, the noise is minimal. “It doesn’t affect the neighborhood. You do hear the small airplanes, but not so much the jets,” Brown says.
Walkable dining spots and locally owned shops close to home
Popular restaurants are easily found here. “Other than downtown, Anchorage doesn’t have many neighborhoods with walkable restaurants nearby,” says Kari Disbrow, a Realtor at Jack White Real Estate who has sold several homes in the area. “Turnagain has some of those rare opportunities to walk to the local haunts for lunch or dinner.” In addition to dining, supermarkets and other shops are close by. You can:
Dine on elk loin and Alaskan scallops and sip craft beer at the Rustic Goat
Order classic breakfast dishes in a lodge-style setting at Gwennie’s Old Alaska Restaurant
Stock up on groceries for the week at the local Carrs

Winter weather prep from snow plows to wind-resistant homes
Anchorage receives over 70 inches of snowfall each year, so winter road maintenance is important. The city sends snow plows to main and collector streets once 4 inches of snow has accumulated. Once the snow stops falling, the city declares a “Plow Out” and aims to clear all residential streets within 84 hours. Wind is another natural force to be aware of due to the mountains in the area creating a funnel for air pressure. Turnagain’s part of town doesn’t get as high winds as the Hillside area, but gusts of 100 mph have happened. The city requires buildings in the Turnagain area to withstand gusts of 130 mph.
Families gather each July for annual block party
Turnagain is a friendly community, highlighted by annual events. “Everybody knows everybody in the neighborhood,” Brown says. “They’re all walking around. They have a Turnagain block party every summer where hundreds of people show up.” The block party takes place each July at the corner of Illiamna Avenue and Lord Baranof Drive. It’s been going on for over 30 years and includes a potluck with burgers, hot dogs, sides and desserts. Families can enjoy activities like a bouncy house, dunk tank and carnival games.
