Suburbia just north of Des Moines
Southeast Ankeny is only a portion of Des Moines’ largest suburb, yet it still offers so much to residents. The area has single-family ranch-style homes and condominiums mere minutes away from a booming commercial district and a wide variety of parks for locals to enjoy. The area also offers quick commutes to the airport and the two elementary schools within the neighborhood. The Ankeny area is special because it has everything residents could need without having to travel to other neighborhoods or cities. It truly “lives like a city of its own,” says Dakotah Reed, an associate sales manager at Iowa Realty who has served the area for over 3 years.
New construction heading east
In the neighborhood's northern portion, intimate housing communities feature a wide selection of midcentury ranch-style homes, split-levels, and condominium options from the 1980s along Delaware Avenue. Manufactured homes built in the 1990s and 2000s are located north of Oralabor Road. Newer residential areas are constantly being constructed thanks to a concentrated push east. "There's plenty of room to build going east," says Realtor Sarah Kavalier. "Going west? Not so much." In many of the neighborhood's residential areas, deciduous trees line the streets, offering a scenic natural environment within the area's otherwise urban setting. Prices typically range from the mid-$100,000s for townhouses and condos, growing into the low $300,000s for updated midcentury homes. Prices peak in the mid-$400,000s for some of the newest construction, including Contemporary Craftsman designs.

Easy access to the rest of Des Moines
Bisected by Interstate 35, the neighborhood allows straightforward access to downtown Des Moines, some 10 miles south. Ankeny Regional Airport is inside the neighborhood and only 2 miles away from many local homes. Broadlawns Medical Center is about 10 miles away in the downtown area for medical care.
Delaware Avenue features a number of big box retailers and is known city-wide for its shopping
Laid back BBQ at Jethro's
Well known by the surrounding area for its shopping corridors, local retail and restaurant options continue growing to match the population. "The restaurant scene has expanded quite a bit in the past few years," says Dakotah Reed, sales manager at Iowa Realty. The Leaning Tower of Pizza has offered various specialty pizzas for over 50 years. Jethro's BBQ Lakehouse has barbecue and Cajun favorites with a laid-back atmosphere for a night out. Target, Sam's Club and Walmart Supercenter are all found in Southeast Ankeny near the airport.
Cool off at Cascade Falls
"So many of the homes are within walking distance of parks," Reed says. Sunrise Park has a sprayground and playset that are popular when the weather gets hot. Summerbrook Park offers a winding path through the trees and more colorful playsets. Cascade Falls Aquatic Center is just west of the area, featuring multiple pools, waterslides, and a lazy river.

Summerfest and Farmers Markets
Perhaps Ankeny's biggest annual event is Summerfest, a three-day celebration the week after the Fourth of July that has been going on for over 58 years. The event features bands, fireworks, parades and carnival rides. For a quieter way to spend a weekend, the Ankeny Uptown Farmers Market is open on Saturdays during the spring and summer, offering fresh produce and homemade treats to enjoy with friends and family.
The rumble of Ankeny’s growth
With all the convenience and popularity of Southeast Ankeny, the area is also prone to a great deal of noise. This is largely due to the airport and Interstate 35 running alongside each other on the eastern side of the neighborhood.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
