Bungalows, Craftsman and ranch style homes priced higher than surrounding areas
The streets of Sunset are laid out on a traditional grid with homes that mostly date back to the early and mid-20th century, including many cozy bungalows, ranch styles and Craftsman homes with wood-shingled siding and exposed beams above their front porches. Small front yards offer room for gardening and landscaping, while wide sidewalks make for easy traveling. There are also several apartment buildings, including older complexes like Twin Parks and the new Sunset Terrace Apartments.A skate park, tennis courts and bocce ball
A major perk of living in Sunset is its parks. Larson Park is where residents can hit the tennis courts, throw a bocce ball or relax under a gazebo. It’s also home to the Arcata Skate Park, the only outdoor skate park in the city. At the opposite end is Shay Park, where a short walking path winds through the woods beside Jolly Giant Creek. Arcata Community Pool, the city’s indoor aquatic center, is less than a mile away and offers lap swimming, a water slide, a hot tub and an outdoor patio. The nearest hiking, biking and outdoor destination is Redwood Park, where trails and picnic areas sit beneath massive, redwood trees teeming with wildlife. Its trails connect with Arcata Community Forest, where sprawling woodlands occupy hundreds of acres of land.Walk to Arcata Elementary School
Arcata Elementary School, which earns a B rating from Niche, is walking distance from many Sunset residences. Sunny Brae Middle School also earn a B rating while nearby Arcata High School earns an A-minus. Arcata High offers a wide range of optional arts and academic electives, from advanced placement courses to visual arts, theater and band. California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt is less than a mile away from Sunset. The college was known as Humboldt State University until it was taken over by California State Polytechnic in 2022. The school and surrounding community are planning for an influx of new students and new infrastructure to accommodate them in the coming years.Easy access to the Pacific Coast Highway
The neighborhood is bordered in the east by State Route 101, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, a regional commuter corridor that connects with cities including Eureka, McKinleyville and Fortuna. California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport is 8 miles north.Local shops, eateries and grocery stores plus Arcata Farmers Market
There are several shops in the neighborhood, including Redwood Retro vintage clothing boutique and Moon Cycles bicycle shop. There’s also Tule Fog Farm, an animal rights-focused farm that sells a variety of ethically sourced produce at the Arcata Farmer’s Market every Saturday. An array of local eateries can be found nearby in Arcata Heights and Downton Arcata, including vegetarian restaurants like Wildflower Café and Bakery and French cuisine at Renata’s Creperie. The closest grocers are Murphy’s Market, a regional grocery chain, and Wildberries Marketplace, a locally owned grocer.Foggy, chilly weather near the oceanfront
Arcata’s weather is typically foggy and chilly because of its proximity to the coast. Temperatures usually range from 40 degrees to 65 degrees all year-round. Fog usually rolls in from the ocean in the morning and dissipates in the early afternoon.
