Valley West is a small neighborhood made up of single-family and manufactured homes, and multiple stores and restaurants. “People will run over to the Harbor Freight in Valley West,” says Andy Parker, a Broker with Azalea Realty who grew up in Arcata. “It’s a place to go shopping.” California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, called Cal Poly by locals, is about 4 miles from Valley West and brings a lot of foot traffic through the neighborhood. “The university has a big effect on the city when it comes to housing,” says Parker.

Valley West is home to a shopping center with a variety of businesses that are anchored by Harbor Freight, Dollar Store and Ray’s Food Place, a supermarket. Throughout the neighborhood are more local shops such as Dandar's Boardgames and Books and Stick2YourGuns arms shop. Oriental Buffet offers Chinese food in a casual setting, and Kebab Café has been serving Mediterranean food in Humboldt County since 1997. For more shopping, downtown Arcata has clothing boutiques like Daydream and Humboldt Outfitters about 3 miles away.

Valley West primarily has a mix of manufactured home communities, small single-family homes and condos. Manufactured homes tend to sell for $60,000 to $240,000. The northern part of Valley West touches the Mad River and is great for walking along the riverbed and viewing nature. Redwood Park has about 800 acres of California Redwood trees and a large network of hiking, biking and horse-riding trails that are 4 miles south of Valley West next to Cal Poly. The Azalea State Natural Reserve has hiking trails and is known for its western azalea flowers. Potawot Community Garden is a 3-acre certified farmers’ market on Valley West’s south side. Humboldt Beach is about 5 miles away, and while the water is too cold for anyone but wetsuit-wearing surfers, it still has sandy shores to sit on.
