Valley West is home to a shopping center with a variety of businesses that are anchored by Harbor Freight, Dollar Store and Ray’s Food Place, a supermarket. Throughout the neighborhood are more local shops such as Dandar's Boardgames and Books and Stick2YourGuns arms shop. Oriental Buffet offers Chinese food in a casual setting, and Kebab Café has been serving Mediterranean food in Humboldt County since 1997. Redwood Park has about 800 acres of California Redwood trees and a large network of hiking, biking and horse-riding trails that are 4 miles south of Valley West next to Cal Poly. The Azalea State Natural Reserve has hiking trails and is known for its western azalea flowers. Potawot Community Garden is a 3-acre certified farmers’ market on Valley West’s south side. Humboldt Beach is about 5 miles away, and while the water is too cold for anyone but wetsuit-wearing surfers, it still has sandy shores to sit on.
