Cascade Heights
Neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia
Fulton County 30311
Families have lived in Cascade Heights their whole lives
Some of Atlanta’s most prominent figures make their home in Cascade Heights. “Andrew Young lives on the same street as my mom. He's a major public figure in Atlanta,” says Erin Martin, a lead bartender at a local restaurant.Mature trees rise from spacious lawns and ivy grows freely within the forested patches between homes in Cascade Heights. “A lot of the homes are established. They have been here probably since the '50s and '60s,” Hayes says. “It’s not a cookie-cutter neighborhood. The houses don’t look alike. You can tell people built these houses, not companies.” Brick ranch styles, split-levels and cottages are common here. Many are in the $200,000s to $300,000s. Cascade Heights also has a selection of condos in the low to mid-$100,000s and a tiny slice of new construction in the $500,000s.Cascade Glade Project is making the neighborhood preserve more accessible
Cascade Springs Nature Preserve's 125 acres came into being in the 1970s — when Atlanta's first Black mayor, Maynard H. Jackson Jr., and a committee of local citizens came together to sell the land to the city to protect it from urbanization. The effort worked, and today, this swath of old-growth forest offers a sanctuary filled with trails passing by waterfalls and streams, a Civil War battleground and a historic moss-covered springhouse. In 2019, the Cascade Glade Project secured a $400,000 capital improvement project grant from the city to improve the pedestrian pathway into the park and make it more accessible for community members. They completed the project in June 2023.Kids get their start at Kimberley Elementary School
Cascade Heights is zoned to Atlanta Public Schools. One pathway is Kimberley Elementary School, Bunche Middle School and Therrell High School, which all earn C ratings on Niche. The high school has an International Baccalaureate program and offers career and technical training. It's also worth noting that Georgia offers school choice, providing more educational options for families. Clark Atlanta University and Spelman College, both historically Black universities, are within 6 miles.Missionary Baptist Church hosts holiday events
Hayes, who grew up in the area, says bonds form at community yard sales, over dinner at local restaurants and Sunday worship services. There's usually an annual event for every holiday, including a trunk-or-treat held by Providence Missionary Baptist Church. Martin says Tyler Perry recently filmed a movie at the church, and that the original Madea films were shot from a home near where she lives in the neighborhood.Cascade Heights is becoming more pedestrian-friendly
While Cascade Heights isn’t a pedestrian’s dream just yet, it is making significant improvements. “It’s getting walkable because there weren’t many sidewalks or anything like that. It was just a two-lane street," Hayes says. Many of these pedestrian improvements were set in motion in 2005 when the city proposed its Redevelopment Plan of Cascade Heights. "They are creating more lanes and bike lanes, but in Atlanta, I just think you need a car, period,” she adds. Cascade Outpatient Center is on Cascade Road and Grady Memorial Hospital is around 12 miles away following Interstate 20. Cascade Road travels west to intersect with I-285, and locals can take that route to get to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in less than 15 miles.Soul food at Big Daddy's, wings at J.R. Crickets
Cascade Road leads to well-loved local restaurants. "You've got The Beautiful, Big Daddy's, J.R. Crickets," Hayes says. "Certain places have been there for so long that you just run into people." Hayes says the owners of Big Daddy's know her and her whole family and everyone's usual order. Martin adds the Spice House is famous for its oxtails, $5 crab clusters and shot specials on Thursdays. Cascade Corners is on the road's western side with a Kroger. Greenbriar Mall is around 3 miles south of the neighborhood for shoe stores and a range of men's and women's clothing shops.
