Gated community living in Mays

The first modern building in what is now the Mays subdivision was Benjamin Mays High School. Named for the Civil Rights leader and built in 1950, the school stood alone until 2019, when builder Rocklyn Homes developed The Cascades, a 400-home gated community centered around two green spaces. Besides beautifully designed townhomes, local creeks and outdoor amenities, residents are well-connected and maintain a neighborhood watch together. “It’s a nice community,” says Nkosi Leary, a local resident and Berkshire Hathaway Realtor. “Everybody looks out for each other. It’s good to have neighbors who will do that for you.”

Townhomes and apartments around The Cascades

The Cascades has two-to-three-story townhomes with oak treads on the stairs and hardwoods on the first floor. Most townhomes in the community cost between $200,000 and $300,000, although homes upwards of $350,000 can include additional amenities such as a gourmet kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a media room and a master bath with a garden tub. “The houses are relatively inexpensive,” Leary says. “You’d have to be real particular if you wouldn’t choose a home over here.” There are also two apartment complexes north and south of the community, with apartments costing between $1,200 and $1,300 monthly in Crystal Heights and $1,400 to $2,000 monthly at The Villages of Cascade.

The Cascades offers a clubhouse, community pool and more

The Cascades has its own clubhouse and community pool, as well as a couple of basketball and tennis courts on the southeastern side of the development. Less than half a mile west from the entrance is the playground at Doctor’s Memorial Park, which was built in 2017 in memory of the historic Southwest Hospital that closed in 2009. There are additional sports facilities at the local high school, including a baseball diamond, tennis courts and a football field with a track.

Brunch and fine dining at Cascade Road

Residents must venture to either the Cascade Corners or the Cascade Crossing shopping center 2 miles south for their shopping and dining needs. There are several Chinese restaurants between the two shopping districts, as well as plenty of grocery stores between Walmart, Kroger and Publix. Fine dining establishments include the Blaze steakhouse and Baltimore Crab & Seafood, and there’s a local brunch spot in Gocha’s Breakfast Bar that serves breakfast pizza and plays live music on the weekends. “You will swag and surf while eating your scrambled eggs,” Leary jokes.

Environmental factors

The CAP Index crime score is 7 out of 10, which is higher than the national average of 4. Leary says cameras are on all of the homes to monitor porch pirate activity, and new lighting is being installed so the streets are better lit at night. Flooding is common around North Utoy Creek, and nearby Interstate 285 can be noisy.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
