West Augusta neighborhood near the mall and major employers

Located in the western portion of Augusta, North Leg combines multiple apartment complexes with 1960s ranch homes and split-levels near two of the biggest employers in the city. Since 1978, a Coca-Cola Bottling Company has called the neighborhood home and has 200-plus Augusta-based employees. North Leg is home to the Augusta Mall and less than 10 miles from Fort Eisenhower, an Army installation. “The houses in the area are older, but it is a well-settled neighborhood,” says Mary Williams, a Realtor with Century 21 Jeff Keller Realty, who has been selling Augusta for nearly two decades. “It is convenient to all of Augusta’s amenities and has access to the public transportation bus line.”

Apartment Complexes near smaller subdivisions

A handful of apartment complexes along North Leg Road provide a space for renters looking for maintenance-free living. The single-family home inventory is predominately brick ranch homes and the occasional split level on modest lots that feature towering trees scattered throughout the area. Based on square footage and condition, buyers can expect prices to range from $137,000 to $257,000. “Homes are moving pretty quickly in the area, and I would say most are not lasting more than 90 days on the market,” Williams says. North Leg’s CAP Index Crime Score ranks higher than the national average, scoring a 6 out of 10 compared to the national average of 4 out of 10. All the neighborhood’s violent Crime Scores rank as 7 out of 10.

Multiple nearby golf courses

At the south end of the neighborhood is Bayvale Park. Mostly open green space with large trees, the park is known for being home to the Augusta Remote Control Supercross track, that has held races in the park for more than 20 years. Augusta Aquatic Center is a public facility operated by the city. It is a competitive swimming pool that hosts local swim meets and is available for rent. Children can take advantage of First Tee Augusta, which enables them to learn life lessons through golf at an affordable rate. Speaking of golf, neighbors are always close to their next round, as Forest Hills Golf Course and Augusta Municipal Golf Course are within 2 miles.

Two journeys through the Richmond County Schools

There are two school paths for children in North Leg through Richmond County School System, which scores a C on Niche. The northern part of the neighborhood will head to Sue Reynolds Elementary and Langford Middle, both earning C-minuses and the Academy of Richmond County for high school. Academy of Richmond County grades a C and is the oldest public school in Georgia, opening in 1783. Closer to U.S. Route 78, children head to nearby Bayvale Elementary, grading as a C-minus, Murphey Middle School, which scores a D-plus and T.W. Josey High School. Josey grades as a C-minus and offers the Eagles Academy, which offers advancement placement and honors courses.

National events in Augusta

North Leg does not have specific community events, the city of Augusta does provide multiple events throughout the year. The first full week of April annually, the town hosts the Master’s, one of the largest golf tournaments in the county. The event is held at Augusta National Golf Course, about 5 miles away. In September, the city has an Ironman Triathlon that runs through the downtown area.

Riding Augusta Transit

Commuters can use the Augusta Transit, the city’s public transportation bus line. The neighborhood is on the Pink Line – Augusta Mall, which stops at Walmart and Augusta Mall. North Leg also borders two major roadways. U.S. Route 78 runs through the southern portion of the area. It stretches from Arkansas to South Carolina, and Interstate 520 runs along the western edge as it encircles most of Augusta, Georgia and North Augusta, South Carolina.

Living next to the Augusta Mall

North Leg is prime with retail locations starting with the Augusta Mall. The two-story shopping center opened in 1978 and features multiple storefronts, including Apple. The mall offers various eateries, including Chick-fil-A and A&D Buffaloes. Residents can find more traditional grocery shopping options along Wrightsboro Road with a Walmart and a Family Dollar. The road also features multiple chain restaurants, but Jackie M’s & Son Café and Catering is a take-out-only spot known for its Philly Cheesesteaks on homemade Italian rolls.

Convenience to two major employers

Since 1978, the Augusta Coca-Cola Bottling Company has made its headquarters at 1901 North Leg Road. However, the story of the bottling company dates to 1902, when J.M. Rainwater and John E. Reed moved from Atlanta to Augusta to start the bottling production of Coke. It is now the country's third largest privately owned bottler and has 200-plus employees at its Augusta location. North Leg is about 7 miles north of Fort Eisenhower, another major Augusta employer. The Army installation is home to the United States Army Signal Corps, Cyber Command and Cyber Center of Excellence.
