Highland

So many restaurants, so little time
Dining options in Highlands abound, each as unique as the city of Austin. Barrett’s Coffee is more than a neighborhood coffee shop. They also serve tea, a coffee-themed root beer float and artisan seltzers. A quintessential Austin hangout, Easy Tiger has 36 rotating beers on tap and a menu with everything from giant pretzels and hot pastrami sandwiches to salads and veggie burgers, not to mention their famous sourdough bread. Sushi meets The Jetsons at Kura Revolving Sushi Bar, where diners can choose from Japanese delicacies passing by them on a conveyor belt, or sit at tables and have their order brought to them. Bun Belly Beer and Bao is a favorite spot for Vietnamese cuisine. For dinner and a movie, residents can catch the latest Hollywood releases at Galaxy Theater, where concessions include hot wings and draft beers.Residents can stock up on groceries at nearby H-E-B on 51st Street, which carries Easy Tiger's sourdough, or snag gourmet ingredients at Dia’s Market. Home necessities can be found at Target in Capitol Plaza on the west side of Interstate 35, where stores include Ross, Champs Sports and K&G. Tanuki Games has popular tabletop games – from D&D to Yugi-Oh, puzzles, board games and more. Tori Kawaii has a huge selection of knick-knacks, gifts and accessories. Kinokuniya – a Japanese word for a place where one can find everything one needs – carries an array of books, writing materials and other gifts.
Mid-century to contemporary home styles
Because of the neighborhood’s development activity, many of the older homes listed for sale in Highland are marketed as investment opportunities, houses that are being sold for the location rather than the existing structure. Fans of modern architecture and new construction will love the futuristic designs that many of the newer homes in the neighborhood feature, though there are still plenty of older ranch-style homes that keep the original feel of the neighborhood somewhat intact. The median home price in Highland is $635,000, and buyers should expect to pay an average of $441 per square foot. A three-bedroom/two-bathroom Cape Cod can sell for $395,000, and prices can go up to over $1 million for a four-bedroom/three-bathroom modern home. “There are a lot of investors and people who are buying to tear-down and rebuild,” says broker and Austin native Renata Doyzak, who has been representing real estate transactions in the area for more than two decades. “There aren’t a lot of places in Austin where you can afford to do that anymore. And prices in Highland are going up as a result.”School days
Highland is districted to the Austin Independent School District, which earns an overall rating of A-minus from Niche. Students in the neighborhood can attend Brown Elementary, Lamar Middle and McCallum High School. Brown earns a C from Niche, Lamar earns an A-minus and McCallum earns an A. Students at McCallum can participate in any of 60 school-sponsored clubs, and they have the opportunity to play any of 24 varsity-level sports. Alternatively, parents can avail themselves of several private schools in the area, including St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, which is rated as the best private school in the Austin area by Niche.Outdoor and indoor fun
When they're looking for some outdoor recreation, Highland residents have multiple options. Reilley School Park, a partnership between the Highland Neighborhood Association and Austin Independent School District, offers a playground, basketball courts, walking trails, multipurpose fields and a picnic pavilion. When the bluebonnets are in bloom, Meadowview Triangle Park in the northern part of the neighborhood is a prime viewing spot. The small pocket park is jam-packed with gorgeous wildflower blooms every spring. For those seeking some indoor workout time, Of the Lion Fitness is located on the west side of the neighborhood. Seasoned climbers can practice their skills, while newbies learn the ropes (literally) at Crux Climbing Center.
An array of commuter options
Commuters appreciate the neighborhood’s proximity to both Interstate 35 and Highway 183, both of which border Highland. The neighborhood is also home to both several Capital Metro bus stops and a Capital Metro Rail Red Line stop. And for those who just want to leisurely stroll, there are plenty of sidewalks in the neighborhood, shaded by mature live oak and pecan trees.
