Neighborhood parks include Convict Hill Quarry and Windmill Run parks
Parks in West Oak Hill include Convict Hill Quarry Park and Windmill Run Park. Convict Hill Quarry Park is a historic site with an interesting backstory. In the late 1800s, after the Texas Capitol burned, the government built a 6-mile railroad line from what was then called Oatmanville to the capitol site in Austin. The state then used inmates to rebuild the building. Limestone proved to be too soft for the exterior, so officials moved the inmates to Burnet County to mine pink granite, which is what the exterior is made of today. The use of inmates is what gave the quarry its name. While not much remains of the original quarry, the park has acknowledged this history. Windmill Run Park is a 50-acre oasis that features hiking trails, a playground and picnic tables. The park showcases a 0.7-mile loop trail on which hikers and mountain bikers can track and race to the highest elevation for great views.
