West Oak Hill in Austin, Texas, embodies warm suburban living amid the trees. Two-story and ranch-style homes, featuring Texas limestone and metal roofs, line the streets, which are canopied by Heritage Oak trees that lent the neighborhood its name. Residents also enjoy spacious backyards.
Originally called Live Oak Tree, the neighborhood Oak Hill has been referred to by its current name since 1900.
The area notably features the Y, a wishbone-like split of highways 290 and 71. As a trade-off for the ensuing congestion, West Oak Hill enjoys convenient access to downtown Austin.
Parks in West Oak Hill include Convict Hill Quarry Park and Windmill Run Park. Convict Hill Quarry Park is a historic site with an interesting backstory. In the late 1800s, after the Texas Capitol burned, the government built a 6-mile railroad line from what was then called Oatmanville to the capitol site in Austin. The state then used inmates to rebuild the building. Limestone proved to be too soft for the exterior, so officials moved the inmates to Burnet County to mine pink granite, which is what the exterior is made of today. The use of inmates is what gave the quarry its name. While not much remains of the original quarry, the park has acknowledged this history.
Windmill Run Park is a 50-acre oasis that features hiking trails, a playground and picnic tables. The park showcases a 0.7-mile loop trail on which hikers and mountain bikers can track and race to the highest elevation for great views.
The West Oak Hill neighborhood feeds into Oak Hill Elementary, Small Middle, and Austin High.
West Oak Hill features some authentic flavors from Austin and beyond. Jack Allen’s Kitchen prides itself on its Texas comfort food, while Shore Raw Bar & Grill is a seafood restaurant that encourages shared plates. For a taste of Detroit, Via 313 uses pans inspired by auto parts to create crispiness on all sides of its Detroit-style pizza.
Donn’s Texas BBQ is a cafeteria-style restaurant that has been in West Oak Hill since the 1990s. Customers relish authentic Texas BBQ: ribs, briskets, sausage, chicken and turkey. The restaurant also serves breakfast.
For at-home cooking, West Oak Hill has an H-E-B grocery store in the area.
