Northwest Bakersfield suburb near highly rated schools
With its proximity to shopping and an easy commute to downtown Bakersfield, Fruitvale is a place where people tend to stick around. “It used to be a little farming town that was then absorbed into Bakersfield,” says William Gordon, who’s sold homes here since 2007 and is the team lead of the Gordon Team at Watson Realty. “Now, it’s a well-established neighborhood in northwest Bakersfield that’s great for families.” Kids here can attend highly rated public schools, and residents are within walking distance of grocery stores. Valley Baptist Church’s large campus sits in the neighborhood’s center, and downtown Bakersfield is 6 miles away.
Mediterranean-style and contemporary ranch-style homes
Fruitvale’s ranch-style homes, which were built from the 1970s through the ‘90s, sit close together along sidewalk-lined streets and cul-de-sacs. "Homeowners here don’t move around often, and may even be the original owners,” says Shanti Brinsfield, a Realtor with Watson Realty with over 21 years of experience. Many homes have Mediterranean-style details like clay-tiled roofs and arched doorways, while some have contemporary 1970s and '80s details like recessed entryways and windowed gables. “Homeowners might renovate after so many years, or add in a pool or backyard workshop,” Brinsfield says. “Extra touches like this make them highly desirable.” Homes have quarter-acre lots, and residents put a lot of attention into their manicured lawns, which often feature ornamental fountains and trimmed shrubs. Home layouts range from 1,400 to 3,400 square feet, and prices typically range from $350,000 to $800,000, depending on size and renovations. Rental apartment complexes are near Fruitvale and Meany Avenues.

The Virtual Business program at Centennial High
Local kids can start school at Discovery Elementary, which earns a B-plus from Niche, and then attend the A-minus-rated Fruitvale Junior High. At the A-minus-rated Centennial High, students can join the two-year Virtual Business program, where they simulate designing and running a business that competes in the Virtual Enterprise National Business Plan Competition; the program’s students won first place at the national competition in 2023. Nearby private schools include the unrated Olive Knolls Christian for pre-kindergarten through Grade 8.

Around 3 miles from the Golden State Highway
Both the Golden State Highway (Route 99) and Rosedale Highway are within 3 miles, and both lead about 6 miles to downtown Bakersfield. “You can pop over to downtown in just 5 minutes because of the 99 to Olive Drive connection,” Gordon says. The Golden Empire Transit bus stops along Olive Drive and Coffee Road, and bike lanes on Coffee and Hageman Roads provide a car-free alternative. Sidewalks make the area pedestrian friendly. Adventist Health Specialty Bakersfield is 5 miles away, and Meadows Field Airport is a 6-mile trip.
Soccer at Emerald Cove Park
The 12-acre Emerald Cove Park next to Discovery Elementary hosts kids’ soccer games, and its basketball and volleyball courts provide other ways to work up a sweat. The park’s playground features several play structures, including one shaped like a Viking ship. “The designated walking track behind Discovery Elementary is also popular with adults,” Brinsfield says. Pocket parks with playgrounds, like Olive Park West and Olive Park East, are spread throughout the neighborhood. The Links at RiverLakes Ranch is a public 18-hole golf course nearby with a night-lit driving range. On hot days, locals can cool off in the air-conditioning at Studio Movie Grill, a movie theater with recliners and in-theater dining, or they can head to the locally owned Firehouse Rosedale Station, a bowling alley and billiards hall.

Halal-certified shawarma at Flame & Skewers Mediterranean Restaurant
Coffee Road is the neighborhood’s main commercial strip, with grocery stores like Vons and WinCo Foods, as well as locally owned restaurants. Tony’s Pizza has been slinging pies in its firefighter-themed restaurant since 2005, and Flame & Skewers Mediterranean Restaurant serves halal-certified shawarma and falafel. More dining can be found along Rosedale Highway, including Salty’s BBQ & Catering, a Bakersfield institution featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.” Rosedale Highway is also home to the Northwest Promenade shopping center, which includes a Target and The Home Depot.
