The northeastern hills of Baltimore

Hamilton Hills, often simply referred to as Hamilton, is a quiet suburb in northeast Baltimore. The neighborhood is an intriguing mix of residential streets and local businesses, many of which have grown from the community to become Baltimore staples. It’s the kind of place where neighbors call each other friends. “Families like to live there because it’s in the city, but it is very much a suburban neighborhood,” says Brian DiNardo, a Realtor with Garner and Co. who has lived in the city since 2001. “That pretty much describes it. John Waters uses Hamilton all the time as the quintessential Baltimore community.”

Home in Hamilton Hills

Prospective homeowners can choose from a variety of styles present in Hamilton Hills. “There are some classic Baltimore brick row houses,” DiNardo says. “But there are other options that give it a truly suburban feel.” These options include American Foursquares, bungalows, barn-like Dutch Colonials and even a few Tudor Revivals, many of which are detached and feature front and back yards. Home prices typically begin around $200,000 and can climb as high as $400,000 depending on lot size and build year. Some townhouses have also been converted into duplexes, which begin around $290,000 for a three-bedroom unit.

Hungry in Hamilton

Several convenience stores and mini marts are available along Harford Road, where residents can also shop for groceries at Safeway. Big Lots is 1 mile north, as is Home Depot. Harford Road is also home to Zeke’s Coffee, Baltimore’s favorite homegrown coffee merchant. Just down the road, another Charm City icon awaits. “I moved here in 2001. I’d had crabcakes before. Then I ate a crab cake at Koco’s Pub,” DiNardo says. “It was a revelatory experience, like when you have your first cheesesteak in Philly. Koco’s is the kind of place where anyone can go and feel comfortable.”

Herring Run Park

When they need time beneath the sun, residents can head 3 miles south across the Morgan State University campus to Lake Montebello. Folks get their steps in on the 1.5-mile loop around this reservoir or play disc golf on the 18-hole course. Herring Run Park offers a more relaxed atmosphere, with several miles of trails wandering through a dense urban woodland in the heart of Charm City. The neighborhood also borders Mount Pleasant Golf Course, so golf enthusiasts can swing away on this public fairway that also features an ice rink.

The Hamilton Farmer’s Market

The weekly Hamilton Farmer’s Market meets at 4500 Harford Road every Tuesday, where residents can peruse the fresh produce and enjoy live music and craft beverages. The neighborhood is also home to the Hamilton Gallery and Arts Collective, open on weekends, where local artists and students from nearby Towson University frequently exhibit their work and where neighbors can attend events like Maker Mixers and free dance classes. And of course, Baltimore’s storied sports venue Camden Yards is just a 7-mile drive from Hamilton, so orange-clad locals can flock to Orioles games.

Baltimore City schools

Students in Hamilton Hills are zoned to attend schools in the Baltimore City Public School district. They may begin either at Woodhome Elementary/Middle School, which scores a C-minus from Niche, or at Hamilton Elementary/Middle School, which earns a C-plus. Woodhome is currently in the process of revamping its website, where helpful advice will be presented to parents and educators through blog-style articles on various topics relating to technology, sports and college admissions, while Hamilton offers afterschool enrichment programs like piano club and chess club. Students may then move to their choice of Baltimore City’s high schools. Reginald F. Lewis High School is rated C-minus and is the only public high school located directly in the neighborhood.
