Old West vibes with historical ties
In some parts of Bodfish, it might feel like you’re in an Old West town and a gunslinger is about to emerge from a cloud of dust. That’s part of the appeal of this California neighborhood in the southern Sierra Nevada, which traces its roots back to around the time of the gold rush and offers slices of history within its boundaries alongside its rugged surroundings. “Bodfish is small,” says Autumn Mitchell, a Realtor and real estate executive with Tobias Real Estate. “It goes up the side of a mountain, but not a major one – more of a hill. It’s real pretty out there and we have nice views.”
Ranch and mobile homes within the mountains
Homes in Bodfish typically range from around $100,000 to the mid-$200,000s, with some other properties like cabins and homes with larger acreage priced as high as close to $450,000. Ranch homes and mobile homes are the most popular and prevalent styles in Bodfish, with some listings offering porches and patios as well. The mountainous surroundings are visible from most residences, and homes and the city-maintained streets are almost all concentrated in the northern third of the neighborhood’s region. Fencing around yards and lawn decorations are also frequent sights along the streets in Bodfish.

HoTK Campground is right between Bodfish Creek and Bodfish Canyon Road in the northern part of the neighborhood, and the southern portion of Bodfish unfolds upward as part of the hilly southern Sierra Nevada. Myers Canyon and Bodfish Canyon are both located in the north-central portion of the neighborhood, while just across the northern border is the town of Lake Isabella. The lake itself is a little farther north, and offers boating, swimming, camping, fishing and more along its shores and on the water. Havilah Preserve, where gold was discovered more than 150 years ago, is just to the south, as are plenty of camps, trails and peaks.

A ghostly guided tour with haunted happenings
For some historical perspective, visit the Silver City Ghost Town, which features a number of buildings relocated from the surrounding area into one location paying homage to the Kern Valley’s frontier heritage. It may or may not be haunted, but it attracts visitors either way. “Right on the border between Lake Isabella and Bodfish is the Silver City Ghost Town,” Mitchell says. “That’s one thing that draws people there. It’s cool at Halloween time, because they do a nighttime walk through the little village there. All of that area had a lot of mining.” That tour is known as the Silver City Lantern Tour & Ghost Hunt and encourages its participants to dress up while walking amongst buildings like an antique store that look straight out of a western.
