"Outdoor-oriented" living in southeastern Boise
Once the site of a thriving lumber company and a small industry town, Barber Valley — one of Boise’s easternmost neighborhoods — is now known for its location between Boise River and the dry, grassy foothills. Few Boise communities enjoy immediate access to both these natural amenities, and locals make the most of their privileged placement. “Life is very outdoor-oriented,” says Barber Valley Neighborhood Association President John Mooney. Realtor Nikki Whiting of Silvercreek Realty Group, who’s specialized in the area for over 10 years, adds, “Mountain biking, hiking and even rock climbing are within just a five-minute bike ride or walk.” Fishing spots, highly rated schools and an annual outdoor theater festival are available in and just outside the neighborhood. “And yet, downtown is only 10 minutes away,” Whiting says.

Immediate foothills and Boise River access
Mooney calls the community “an urban strip bordered on both sides by conservation areas.” Many residents are within blocks of the Boise River Wildlife Management Area, a 36,000-acre section of the foothills. Locals taking public-access paths from the residential section into the foothills might spot deer, elk, mountain lions or other creatures. “Venturing off those trails can be a problem for the wildlife habitat,” Mooney warns. “In winter, hikers keep their dogs on leashes.” Other properties are within walking distance of the Boise River and the 72-acre Marianne Williams Park. Birdwatchers and anglers frequently take advantage of the park’s river access. “You can float down the Boise River when the levels come down a little bit,” Whiting adds. Bikers and pedestrians visiting the park can access the 25-mile Boise River Greenbelt, which connects to downtown.

From mobile homes to multimillion-dollar estates
A master-planned community called Harris Ranch occupies most of Barber Valley. It includes several subdivisions of homes from the 2000s onward, which sit on dense, winding streets centered around community swimming pools. While the lots are tightly packed, the home sizes generally compensate, with an average of about 2,500 square feet. Harris Ranch homes include contemporary, 2020s-built condos from one to three bedrooms that cost between $300,000 and $500,000. Similarly styled townhouses are available from roughly $500,000 to $800,000. Single-family homes start at around $800,000 and feature contemporary, Craftsman and Prairie-style architecture. Some feature over 5,000 square feet of living space, half-acre lots, foothill views and private pools — and carry price tags up to $2.5 million. Barber Valley is also home to Golden Dawn Estates, a mobile home community with two- and three-bedroom properties in the $100,000s and $200,000s.
New townhomes in Barber Valley typically run between $500,000 to $800,000.

Sushi, sandwiches and more
A few dining spots are interspersed with Barber Valley’s homes, especially in the southeast section. Many residents can walk to Lost Shack, a collaboration between local businesses Lost Grove Brewing and Sushi Shack. Sushi and craft beer are this open-aired restaurant’s staples, while wine, seltzers and other refreshments are available at the bar. Lucky 13 Pizza next door has served savory pies since 1989; appetizers, salads and sandwiches are also on the menu. Across the street, Coffee Mill serves breakfast, lunch and — of course — coffee, while Ranch Market offers grab-and-go meals and some groceries. A larger grocery selection is available about 1 mile west at the nearest Albertsons.
