Northwest is close to trails, shopping and dining

On the edge of Boise, Northwest is a suburban neighborhood surrounded by popular shopping, dining and recreation. The Foothills sit just north of the community, making it easy to get outside for a hike or bike ride across the sagebrush-covered landscape. Head south, and you'll hit State Street, which has big-box stores, locally owned restaurants and chain spots. With a straightforward commute into Downtown Boise and highly rated schools, Northwest is a well-rounded neighborhood in Idaho's capital city.

Newer homes offer more affordable prices than nearby areas

Multiple subdivisions fill the neighborhood, often featuring New Traditional and ranch-style homes on streets dotted with tall, leafy trees. Sidewalks frame the neighborhood's roads, offering walkability, and attached garages are common. The area is on the newer side for Boise, with a median build year of 1994 and many homes from the 2020s. While it's surrounded by more expensive areas, Northwest offers a chance at a bargain. "It's a neat part of town. It's still affordable compared to the North End," says Jen Clements, an associate broker at Homes of Idaho with eight years of experience. "It's kind of in between Eagle and the North End. Eagle is our most expensive zip code, and the North End is second." Homes typically cost between the lower $300,000s and upper $700,000s. Homeowners associations are common and can have monthly fees of up to $55.

Biking, hiking and playing at local trails and parks

Getting outside is easy in Northwest, with two of Boise's most popular features surrounding the neighborhood. "The access to the Foothills and the Greenbelt is a big deal," Clements says. You can access multiple trails from the community, including the Seaman's Gulch and Veterans trailheads, offering miles to explore on foot, by bike or on horseback. Just south of the neighborhood, the Boise River Greenbelt gives you more room for hiking and biking, stretching for 29 miles along the water. The River Club is a private golf course nearby, but if you're in the mood for a casual game, you can check out Pierce Park Greens, a public nine-hole course. Optimist Youth Sports Complex anchors the neighborhood's northwestern edge, with 51 acres that include soccer fields, off-leash dog areas, and a fishing pond.

Students can attend strong Boise schools and specialty programs

Northwest is served by the highly rated Boise School District. Some options for neighborhood students include:

  • Riverglen Junior High School, which is in the neighborhood, for seventh through ninth grades
  • Capital High School, known for its planetarium and wide range of AP classes
  • The Treasure Valley Math and Science Center magnet program
  • Exploring schools outside of the district thanks to Idaho's open enrollment law

How residents get from Northwest to downtown and beyond

Northwest is further from downtown than other neighborhoods, but State Street offers a straight shot into the city center. The drive is about 8 miles and can take up to 30 minutes during rush hour. If you'd rather bike, you'll have about a 9-mile trip on the Greenbelt into downtown, which can take around 45 minutes. Eagle is about 4 miles west of the neighborhood along State Street, and multiple bus routes serve the neighborhood, connecting to downtown, the Boise Airport and Boise Towne Square.
