Veterans Park
Older homes combined with modern townhouses and apartments
Residents have a variety of housing styles and price ranges to choose from. “It’s very similar to Garden City, where the houses are older from the 1970s to the 90s. But then you have some newer homes by Quinn’s Pond,” Wuertz says. The newest homes are typically modern townhouses and apartments near the Boise River and the Greenbelt. Other 21st-century homes are contemporary and craftsman two stories with their own garages. Other single-family homes are ranch styles from the early to mid-20th century. Single-family home prices range from $367,000 for older, one-bedroom builds to $1.1 million for newer and larger models. There aren’t many sidewalks in the neighborhood and homes sit on small, close-together lots. Prices can range from $33,000 to $328,000 for a manufactured home, and townhouses are available from $320,000 to $835,000.As of December 2024, Veterans Park is involved in a lawsuit with the city over approving a new homeless shelter along State Street in the neighborhood’s north end. The Veterans Park Neighborhood Association says it’s causing concern for residents. “The ongoing legal battle has really demoralized the neighborhood, and many folks who are able and lived nearest the proposed shelter have moved out of the neighborhood,” the association said in an email. The VPNA presented its arguments to the Idaho Supreme Court in October 2024 and is awaiting further decisions.
Daily activity at Veterans Memorial Park and Boise Greenbelt
Veterans Park is an ideal spot for recreation. Its namesake 38-acre park is centrally located in the neighborhood, with playgrounds, trails and picnic tables. Despite Boise’s four-season weather, folks come out year-round, whether they’re walking the trails or playing fetch with their dogs on the open fields. To the neighborhood’s north is Willow Lane Park, which has athletic fields for softball and soccer, plus a BMX Jump Park. Both parks have access to the Boise Greenbelt, the premier trail in the Treasure Valley; the 25-mile trail travels through all of Boise, and there are plans to extend it in Eagle. Bikers can take the Greenbelt downtown for a 4-mile ride or to reach another park. South of the neighborhood is Whitewater Park, where people can go boating, surfing and kayaking.Prime rib specials at Westside Drive-In
Restaurants and stores can be found along State Street. The Westside Drive-In is a retro, 1950s-themed establishment with American comfort foods like sandwiches, burgers and milkshakes. The diner was also mentioned in Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives; its prime rib, which is served only on Fridays and Saturdays, got a lot of attention. Alchemist Coffee opened in April 2021 and has gained a following within the Boise metro area. Its exterior blends with the modern theming of the apartments above, and it serves traditional coffee along with breakfast and lunch choices. Alyonka Russian Cuisine has a modern setting with country dishes like beef stroganoff, pelmeni and shuba. Outside the neighborhood on Fairview Avenue, Capri has been a Boise staple for generations; regulars love its classic breakfast. Albertsons is nearby for groceries.Three elementary school options
There are three public elementary schools in Veterans Park, but most students attend Whittier Elementary School, which holds a B-minus grade on Niche. North Junior High earns an A rating from Niche; the school has over 20 activities and clubs, including a Taylor Swift Club. Boise High School is rated A, and students can participate in advanced programs like dual credit courses from four universities or nearly 30 AP courses.2 miles to Downtown Boise
State Street is a busy thoroughfare that travels east and west, reaching Eagle and downtown Boise. “It's a pretty central location as far as commute,” Wuertz says. “Most people work in Boise, which may be less than a 10-minute drive.” Drivers can access Interstate 84 through the Boise connector on the neighborhood’s south end. Valley Regional Transit is the city’s public busing system that has 19 routes around the city. The Boise International Airport, 8 miles away, has direct flights to 28 cities.
