Private mountain homes for settling down
Homes in Mountain Meadows are dotted along dirt roads that branch off from a main residential loop. Contemporary mountainside homes built in the 1970s are a common sight, alongside multi-story cabins that have wood siding, decks and picture windows. These properties span 1,800 to 3,500 square feet and cost between $775,000 and $1.5 million, depending on square footage. Smaller homes with traditional architecture are priced from $545,000 to $850,000. The neighborhood also has a handful of other unique housing styles, such as barns and A-frame cottages. While a market rarity, these properties cost $825,000 to $1.1 million when available. “Many homes have the original owners living there, while others are turned over and have been purchased by the younger generations,” Levine says. “I had one client who had built his house himself in the early 70s, coming in from Denver every weekend to work on it. He and his wife lived there for the remainder of their lives.”Thick forests separate most houses from each other, while others sit on acres of grassy fields and open land. The separation creates a sense of privacy, which speaks to Mountain Meadows’ CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, compared to the national average is 4.
Exploring one trail at a time
Situated at the edge of Roosevelt National Park, Mountain Meadows sits in a convenient location for outdoor enthusiasts. “There are plenty of hiking trails throughout the neighborhood. These are mainly used by residents and are not necessarily listed on public trail maps, so you never need to worry about crowds,” Levine says. The Sugarloaf Mountain Trailhead is about 3 miles from the neighborhood and travels up its namesake mountain to a rocky summit. To the east, The Betasso Preserve is an open space of rolling plains with several trailheads that allow hiking, biking, horseback riding and winter snowshoeing. Picnic tables sit at the entrance for a place to rest and rejuvenate. Other nearby trails include Boulder Canyon Trail, Bihedral Trail and Anemone Point.Getting educated by the Boulder Valley School District
Children living in Mountain Meadows can attend Boulder Valley public schools. Flatirons Elementary School earns an A grade from Niche and provides hands-on learning experiences through its Innovative Learning Lab. Casey Middle School has an A-minus grade and offers a dual immersion bilingual program. Boulder High School maintains an A and Niche ranks it as the No. 9 best public high school in Colorado. Boulder High allows students to earn college credit through concurrent enrollment.Extreme weather and environmental challenges
Mountain Meadows’ location in the Roosevelt National Forest may create a unique set of environmental challenges. With Boulder Creek winding through the area, heavy rain could cause flooding that impacts roads. The area’s large grassy fields, pine trees and dry climate may also create a risk of potential wildfires. The neighborhood is sandwiched between Station One and Station Two of the Sugarloaf Fire Protection District and both stations respond to calls for any structure fires, wildfires, lost hikers and other medical emergencies. Additionally, “winter weather tends to be a bit more extreme, so expect colder temperatures and more snow compared to the city,” Levine says. “A good set of snow tires is essential for anyone looking to live in the mountains.”Traveling in and around Mountain Meadows
Mountain Meadows Road and Mountain Pines Road make up the neighborhood’s residential loop. Both dirt paths connect to Sugarloaf Road, which is the main thoroughfare. Commuters can take Sugarloaf Road east, where it connects to Colorado state Highway 119, also known as Boulder Canyon Drive, and into the city. Downtown Boulder is about 9 miles away.Downtown Boulder’s shops and restaurants
Since Mountain Meadows is primarily residential, traveling to Boulder is required for shopping and dining. Downtown is roughly 9 miles away and has dozens of unique shops and locally owned restaurants. University Bicycles is a popular place to purchase a bike and accessories, and Mable and Moss is a clothing boutique. Sherpa’s Adventure Restaurant and Bar celebrates the Himalayan Sherpa culture with authentic Tibetan cuisine. Cozobi Fonda Fina serves traditional Mexican dishes, and Nick-N-Willy’s Pizza has savory slices. A commercial corridor along 28th Street is a little more than 10 miles away from the neighborhood and has national retail options. Grocery stores include Safeway, Natural Grocers and Whole Foods Market.
