A green community 25 miles north of Baltimore City
Almost 20 miles north of Baltimore is the Loch Raven Reservoir, and 5 miles north of that is Jacksonville, Maryland, a suburban community situated in the wooded county hills. “Jacksonville’s a little far from everything, but it has shortcuts to everywhere,” says Jordan Sarnovsky, a lifelong resident of the neighborhood. The area is more rural than surrounding communities, with country backroads weaving through the densely forested expanse. Yet despite its vastness, Jacksonville retains a small-town atmosphere complemented by its locally owned businesses and involved community. With top-quality schools and large homes to boot, Jacksonville draws the attention of families and those who long for a community where the guys at the pizza shop know your order when you walk through the door. “The volunteer fire company across from Safeway does a lot of engagement,” Sarnovsky adds. “Everything from food donation tables to changing their sign to congratulate kids on high school graduations. It’s not very big or well-known, but it’s a comfortable and homey place.”
You don't have to wander far from Jacksonville's center to find a lush, pastural setting.
The dam at Loch Raven Reservoir is integral for powering Jacksonville's homes and businesses.

Home in the wooded hills of Jacksonville
While parts of residential Jacksonville have been around since the 1960s, the area has also been a prime target for recent development. “There are so many houses, and they just keep building more,” Sarnovsky says. “Just the other day, I drove through and saw a new complex of big Modern Traditional homes.” Home styles vary widely across the neighborhood, where prospective buyers will find midcentury ranch-styles, 1960s split-levels, Colonial Revivals built in the 1990s and newly constructed modern traditional homes. These often sit on lots that are an acre or larger and frequently feature driveways, garages, front and backyards and views of the surrounding woodland. Ranch-styles typically price between $475,000 and $545,000. For a split-level, buyers can expect to spend anywhere from $635,000 to $750,000. Prices for recently constructed Colonial Revivals and modern traditional homes begin around $800,000 and can rise over $1 million.
Many homes in Jacksonville have large front lawns.

The desirable Baltimore County school district
Children in Jacksonville are zoned to attend Jacksonville Elementary, which scores an A-minus from Niche and was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2020. Students then proceed to Cockeysville Middle School, rated B-plus, which Niche ranks as the No. 5 Best Public Middle School out of the 30 in Baltimore County. They finish at Dulaney High School, which earns an A. Students at Dulaney can participate in over 70 different clubs and athletics programs, including robotics and a golf team. The school is 6.5 miles from the center of the neighborhood, across the Loch Raven Reservoir.

Northern Maryland’s rural highways
Getting around Jacksonville requires driving along country roads that wind through farmland, rolling hills and dense pockets of trees. “There’s not very many close highway entrances,” Sarnovsky says. “You’d have to take Jarrettsville Pike or go along Paper Mill Road.” These two roads converge at Four Corners, one of the few places to fill up the gas tank before continuing west 7 miles to Interstate 83 or south 8.5 miles to Interstate 695, better known as the Baltimore Beltway. “Besides that, Manor Road is the closest other major highway,” Sarnovsky adds. “That’ll take you right down to Dulaney Valley.”
Four Corners for groceries, restaurants and more
Although Jacksonville is quite a distance from the city, locals will not have to travel far for modern conveniences. “Four Corners is the only town-ish part of the neighborhood. It’s where everything is,” Sarnovsky says. “The grocery store, the urgent care, restaurants, the veterinary hospital – everything people need, Four Corners is where they go.” Residents can stock up on pantry staples at Safeway or pick up fresh produce at Albright Farms, a seasonal farmers market that has served the community since 1911. This shopping center is also where locals head when they want a night out but don’t want to travel far from home. “Strapasta is a cute family-owned Italian place. It’s one of the only restaurants in the area where you can get good food quickly, so it gets really busy in the evenings,” Sarnovsky says. “My dad and I used to go so often that the guys behind the counter knew us. That’s the kind of place it is.”
Jacksonville combines the best of rural living with the convenience of the suburbs.

Parks and wildlife north of Baltimore
One particular draw of Jacksonville is the amount of opportunity for outdoor recreation offered by the neighborhood’s expansive green spaces. “At Sweet Air Park, there’s the Jacksonville Senior Center with a tiny trail around it,” Sarnovsky says. “You’ll see lots of retired people or gossiping neighbors walking around it in the morning.” This park is also home to two athletic fields and a baseball diamond. Some homes in the neighborhood look out on the Gunpowder Falls State Park, with trails rising from the valley floor into residents’ backyards. Proximity to Loch Raven Reservoir means that locals are only 6 or so miles from Baltimore County’s largest body of water, where they can boat, fish, and hike the miles of woodland trails. Golfers will enjoy Hillendale Country Club’s 18-hole course, established in 1923. “Hillendale is probably the biggest country club in the area,” Sarnovsky says. “And it’s right down the road from Phoenix Wildlife Center, which I love. It’s a place to bring sick or hurt animals that can’t go to a vet.” The Wildlife Center provides rehabilitation services for wildlife and hosts regular environmental educational programs for the community.
The walking paths at Sweet Air Park is a popular amenity for Jacksonville residents.
Jacksonville anglers can be spotted fishing at Loch Raven Reservoir during the summer months.

A rural Maryland neighborhood with a small-town feel
While Jacksonville residents can head 10 miles south to Towson or 24 miles south to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, many prefer to stick around the neighborhood and enjoy community events. The Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Company holds annual events like the Pit Beef Fundraiser, and neighbors come together on national holidays for special celebrations. “They do fireworks at the elementary school every year for July 4th, although it’s actually at the end of June most of the time,” Sarnovsky says. “Everyone parks along the road and walks to the school, but my dad and I used to park at Sweet Air Park back when it was nothing but farmland. We would sit on the roof of the car and watch.”
The Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Company faithfully serves the community.
The smallest of the small businesses abound in Jacksonville.
