Suburban Neighborhood in Bristol, Rhode Island
Bristol County 02809
The neighborhood of Mt. Hope High School is of course distinguished by that namesake academic institution, centrally located near the main thoroughfare of Chestnut Street. That adds an element of history to an otherwise fairly modern suburb dotted by new construction: every year, the high school leads the oldest Fourth of July parade in the country.
“You also have Rogers Williams University nearby, and you can feel the college’s presence interwoven with the surrounding neighborhoods,” says Ellie Wickes, a Realtor with Sotheby’s.
Residential roads end in cul-de-sacs, creating a quiet flow to the neighborhood. You’ll see proper names adorning the streets, such as Jane Lane, Carol Avenue, Alan Drive and Naomi Street. Colonial homes sit back on the lot, fronted by grassy lawns and framed by ornamental bushes and hedges. Several small parks are interspersed throughout, giving the neighborhood a green and vibrant character.
The new construction from 2023 that you’ll see more widely available around this neighborhood does compliment the Colonial homes clustered around the high school. They tend to be contemporary takes on the ranch home style, with covered front porches and attached garages. Some may show up in traditional white, but others aim for a bolder look with slate blue. Interiors tend to have bespoke offerings, like a copper kitchen sink or dramatic 12-foot ceilings. Lot sizes are often a half-acre or more. Prices are in the mid to upper $700,000s.
It isn’t just the high school that has a good reputation here. Colt Andrews Elementary enrolls 300 students in grades K-5, and has a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Niche gave the school a B-plus in the academics category and a B overall. The school’s architecture has prominent Grecian features, such as large columns near the entrance. Kickemuit Middle has the same student-teacher ratio, but is much larger, with nearly 700 students enrolled in grades 6-8. Still, like with the elementary, Niche gave the middle school a B-plus in the academics category and a B overall. The neighborhood’s namesake school enrolls over 900 students at the 9-12 grade level, but maintains a 14 to 1 student-teacher ratio. Niche gave the school a B in clubs and activities. The girls’ gymnastics team, for example, won consecutive state championships 2016-2019.
As a suburb just north of downtown Bristol, there are all sorts of fun destinations you can travel to – but residents prefer to enjoy the gems placed right in their neighborhood. Hope Street on the west end is the commercial corridor where locals like to explore their options, whether it’s shopping for groceries at Seabra Foods or taking a session at Rhode Island Hot Yoga. Waterfront dining is on offer at The Beach House, where you can also sample from a creative seafood-centric menu – try the crab empanadas with tamarind curry sauce, or the grilled swordfish topped with peaches. Near the restaurant is also the beginning of the East Bay Bike Path, a nearly 15-mile trail that follows a former railroad line all the way to Providence.
This is a place where you can feel all the elements of a neighborhood woven together, to create a cohesive community – from academics to housing to dining destinations.
